Josef Newgarden’s Stunning Comeback Shakes Up St. Pete Race

Josef Newgarden delivered a remarkable turnaround at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, battling through difficulties all weekend to claim seventh place in the fiercely contested race. The two-time IndyCar Series champion’s impressive recovery was highlighted by a methodical climb from 23rd on the starting grid to a solid top-10 finish on the 1.8-mile street circuit on Sunday.

Newgarden’s weekend began poorly with a crash into the tire barrier at Turn 13 during the initial practice, which disrupted his preparation. Compounding this, a late error in qualifying forced him to start near the back, making his path forward exceptionally challenging on the 14-turn street course.

Challenging Start Marred by Crash and Difficult Qualifying

During the opening practice session, Newgarden experienced a high-impact collision with the tire barrier, jeopardizing his weekend’s prospects at this demanding venue. This incident, coupled with mishaps in qualifying, left him starting 23rd, a position that seemed unlikely to yield a strong finish in the grueling 100-lap event.

Discussing his starting position, Newgarden said,

“Yeah, the team did a great job today,”

and,

“It’s a shame we just couldn’t start up front. I knew we had a good race car and would have loved to have been in the mix from the beginning. I think we could have made something happen. It was just a boring day for us.”

Strategic Tire Choices and Pit Stops Fuel the Comeback

Newgarden’s race strategy played a pivotal role in his recovery. Launching the race on the harder Firestone primary tires, he steadily advanced into the top 10 by the 30th lap. His team’s strategic call to switch to softer alternate tires five laps later was instrumental, helping him maintain competitive pace through the middle portion of the race up to his last stop on lap 70.

Praising his pit crew’s efforts, Newgarden commented,

“The pit stops were incredible,”

and shared,

“I mean, just about the best I’ve seen them in years. The strategy was pretty standard, but it was a good day for our strategy. Nothing went against us, and we just tried to use our speed when we could to climb. I think you’ve got to be somewhat happy with a day like that.”

Firestone’s ENLITEN Tires Present New Challenges and Opportunities

This race marked the debut of Firestone’s new ENLITEN Technology tires, which introduced fresh dynamics to tire management throughout the event. Newgarden noted the significant performance drop the softer red tires experienced, requiring careful handling to optimize race pace.

He observed,

“Look, the reds definitely had a drop-off point that you had to manage,”

adding,

“For some people, it was worse than others. If you managed it, it seemed to be okay. I thought our car was pretty nice and friendly on them. We were able to utilize them as best as possible, and others struggled.”

Newgarden’s Resilience Highlights Team Penske’s Strength

Despite the weekend’s early turmoil and a difficult position on the grid, Newgarden’s skill and persistent drive ensured a valuable points finish for Team Penske. His steady, focused approach amid adversity demonstrated resilience and teamwork critical in the unpredictable nature of IndyCar racing.

As the St. Petersburg event concluded, Newgarden’s performance underscored that even when events start unfavorably, determination and smart strategy can reshape results significantly. His comeback offers strong momentum as the IndyCar season continues, proving that no race is ever truly lost until the final lap is completed.
