Josef Newgarden Sparks Team Penske’s Dual Win in Phoenix

Josef Newgarden played a pivotal role in Team Penske’s dominant weekend at Phoenix Raceway, helping the organization capture victories in both the IndyCar and NASCAR events. The two-time IndyCar champion secured the Good Ranchers 250 on Saturday, and his performance energized NASCAR teammate Ryan Blaney to claim the Cup Series win on Sunday.

Team Penske Celebrates a Weekend Sweep at Phoenix

With both NASCAR and IndyCar cars competing at Phoenix Raceway last weekend, Team Penske gathered for a joint dinner on Saturday evening. During this meet-up, Josef Newgarden urged Ryan Blaney and the NASCAR crew to keep the momentum going by winning the Straight Talk Wireless 500 race.

Blaney responded to the challenge by ending Tyler Reddick’s recent winning streak and delivering a crucial victory for Team Penske. This flawless performance highlights the strength of the Penske operation as it approaches its 60th anniversary in motorsports in 2026. Following the race, Michael Nelson, Team Penske’s NASCAR president, reflected on Newgarden’s influence ahead of the Cup race.

“Yeah, no, he put the pressure on us,” Nelson said (via ASAP Sports.) “We had an event last night with our sponsors, all of our drivers. He definitely pushed hard on us to try to keep up our end of the bargain. We would have done the same. We’re just glad we were able to get it done, bring it home today. He had a great race yesterday. Really great for Team Penske.”

Jonathan Hassler, Ryan Blaney’s crew chief, echoed Nelson’s sentiments on Newgarden’s motivational role during the weekend.

“Yeah, same thing. I echo what Michael said. To see those (IndyCar) guys do well, it was a really fun race to watch. I really like this event. There were a lot of the NASCAR guys and crew members that stayed after and watched the race, got to experience firsthand what we don’t get the opportunity to see. Great weekend for everybody, fans included. So pretty cool.”

The IndyCar series returned to Phoenix Raceway this year for the first time since 2018, a year in which Newgarden secured a victory as well. He successfully defended his title at the track this time, reinforcing his dominance on the 1-mile oval.

Josef Newgarden Takes Lead in IndyCar Championship After Key Victory

Following his win at the Good Ranchers 250, Josef Newgarden emerged as the new leader in the IndyCar championship standings. His triumph ended reigning champion Alex Palou’s impressive 622-day streak at the top. Palou, who races for Chip Ganassi Racing, suffered a crash early in the race after contact with Rinus Veekay, resulting in a DNF that cost him the lead.

Palou had maintained the points lead since his Laguna Seca victory in 2024 and started the 2026 season strongly by winning the opener in St. Pete. Now, with 78 points after two races, Newgarden leads the championship by five points ahead of Kyle Kirkwood. Scott McLaughlin and Pato O’Ward hold third and fourth positions, while Palou has dropped to fifth.

In a post-race press conference, Newgarden expressed confidence in his team’s potential to contend for the IndyCar title throughout the season.

“I’ve never come into a year with this team and thought, ‘I don’t know that we can excel this year, I just don’t know that we can get there.’ I never believed that. I’ve always seen the potential with this team. It looks a little different now. But that potential was always there in the past, and we could deliver on it. I think we can deliver on it this year.”

“It’s an everyday process. We’re going to take it one step at a time. Doesn’t mean there’s not going to be some turbulence. I think if we do our jobs and control what’s in our control, I don’t see why we can’t be in the fight,” he added.

Impact of the Phoenix Doubleheader on Team Penske and the Season Ahead

Team Penske’s sweep at Phoenix marks a significant milestone as the organization approaches six decades of motorsports excellence. Josef Newgarden’s success in the IndyCar race boosted the team’s championship prospects, while Ryan Blaney’s Cup Series win extended their momentum into NASCAR. This rare weekend double win highlights the team’s depth and competitive strength across multiple racing series.

Looking forward, Newgarden’s lead in the championship points and his confident mindset position him as a strong contender for this year’s IndyCar title. Meanwhile, Team Penske’s combined efforts underline their ability to excel under pressure and maintain their place as a motorsports powerhouse in both IndyCar and NASCAR as the 2026 season progresses.
