Kimi Antonelli Says Racing Hamilton, Verstappen Is Now Routine

In 2025, Andrea Kimi Antonelli made his much-anticipated debut in Formula 1, taking on the formidable challenge of replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. The 19-year-old Italian was thrust into the spotlight after Hamilton left for Ferrari, with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff placing great trust in the academy graduate to uphold the team’s high standards. Antonelli’s rookie season immediately pitched him into battles against seasoned champions like Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, shaping a coming-of-age year for the young driver.

While Antonelli showed flashes of promise, such as securing his first podium finishes, he also endured rookie difficulties, including a notable collision with Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix. Added setbacks, like an unsuccessful rear suspension upgrade, hampered his confidence and consistency, limiting him to a single points finish between rounds seven and thirteen. Nevertheless, the Bologna native earned three podiums across the season, with notable performances including a second place in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, and third places in both the Canadian and Las Vegas Grands Prix.

Antonelli Reflects on Competing Against Champions Hamilton and Verstappen

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2025 was particularly significant for Antonelli, as he demonstrated his growth by finishing second after a tough sprint race where he chased McLaren’s Lando Norris. His ability to hold off Verstappen in the main race highlighted his rising confidence and racecraft. Initially, racing alongside icons like seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and four-time champion Max Verstappen was a daunting experience for the rookie.

Antonelli shared his perspective with Gazzetta dello Sport, recalling the thrill of those first races:

“I remember last year when I found myself doing my first laps next to champions like Hamilton and Verstappen. It was impressive. Now, I’ve gotten used to it, and it’s become the norm, like everything else in this world.”

I have immense respect and admiration for them, but the goal when we have our helmets on is always the same – no matter who you are racing against, you have to want to beat everyone.

New Generation Rivalries and Expanding Competition in 2026

Over the course of his debut season, Antonelli’s impression of racing legends Hamilton and Verstappen evolved. Hamilton, who was winning the GP2 championship when Antonelli was born, had already secured seven F1 titles before the Italian even entered the sport. Verstappen, a four-time champion as of 2025, had started his career just as Antonelli began karting in his youth.

Despite this historical gap, after one year competing at the highest level, both Hamilton and Verstappen are now just two of Antonelli’s 21 rivals on the 2026 Formula 1 grid. The rookie has widened his sights, embracing fresh challenges against newer talents like McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Antonelli described his early contests with Piastri as evoking a similar intensity to his initial battles with Verstappen, signaling an expanding and fiercely competitive field.

The 2026 season is also marked by rising stars such as George Russell, who recently topped lap counts at the Barcelona shakedown, reflecting the physical and strategic demands emerging drivers face. Antonelli’s journey from rookie to a formidable competitor among champions underscores the shifting landscape of Formula 1 racing.
