The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season marks Kyle Busch’s 22nd full-time year competing in the sport. Holding 63 career Cup wins and two championships, Busch has already reached many milestones. Despite this success, the 40-year-old driver of the #8 car has not won a Cup race since June 2023 and missed the playoffs for the past two years. Entering a contract year with Richard Childress Racing (RCR), Busch’s future with the team remains uncertain.
Recently, Busch spoke with FOX motorsports reporter Bob Pockrass about his expectations for the 2026 season and what lies ahead for his NASCAR career beyond this year.
Busch Aims to Return to Victory Lane and Assess Performance by Midseason
Since joining Richard Childress Racing before the 2023 season, Kyle Busch demonstrated flashes of competitiveness by winning three of the first 15 races with the team. However, he has not visited victory lane since. Busch highlighted the importance of winning as a key factor if he is to extend his stay with RCR beyond 2026.
You’ve got to get back to victory lane. It’s all about winning races, it’s all about being able to capitalize on those days, and having a good team around you. You win from top to bottom, so looking forward to seeing what [crew chief Jim Pohlman] has for us and what we can do with that,
Busch said.
He also emphasized that early races will not definitively reflect their season standing. Busch named the Coca-Cola 600 in May as a critical benchmark to evaluate their points position and overall competitiveness.
I’ve always kinda said once you get to the Coke 600, that’s sorta where you’ll fall in the season and where your points are and where you kinda stack up. You can go about one or two places higher or lower than where you’re at currently. I would say that would be a good time to start judging,
Busch added.
Uncertainty Surrounding Busch’s NASCAR Future Doesn’t Cause Worry
Despite the unknowns regarding his status beyond this season, Busch expressed no anxiety about his NASCAR future. Having been through similar situations before, he chooses to focus on what he can control rather than worry about outcomes.
I don’t really worry. It kinda is what it is. I’ve always told Samantha [Busch] the same thing. You can’t worry about things you can’t control. All you can do is go out there and do what you can do and the good Lord will take care of the rest. If I’m here in the future, great,
Busch stated.
Busch’s career included 15 successful seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing, where he secured 56 wins and two championships in 2015 and 2019, driving the #18 car. He shifted to Richard Childress Racing after the 2022 season.
Looking ahead, Busch will compete in his 21st Daytona 500 on February 15. While he has yet to win the iconic race, his best result remains a second-place finish in 2019.
Significance of 2026 Season for Busch and NASCAR Fans
The 2026 season represents a crucial period for Kyle Busch, as he seeks to rekindle his winning form and solidify his future in NASCAR. His ability to return to victory lane not only impacts his contract prospects with RCR but also affects how fans and the sport view one of its most accomplished drivers. The performance through the early races and particularly the Coca-Cola 600 will offer vital insight into Busch’s competitiveness.
With his extensive record and championship pedigree, Busch’s journey in 2026 will be closely followed. Success or struggles during this season could shape the final chapters of his distinguished career or lead to new directions within NASCAR.
