Kyle Busch nearly missed the start of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season after sustaining a serious leg injury at his home just days before the Cook Out Clash exhibition at Bowman Gray Stadium. The No. 8 driver suffered a deep laceration that required immediate medical attention and 24 stitches.
Busch shared the chaotic details while appearing on his wife Samantha’s podcast, Certified Oversharer, describing how a routine task turned into a frightening injury.
Details of the Incident at Home
On a seemingly normal day at the Busch household, Kyle attempted to fix a malfunctioning smoke detector located on the upper level of his home. Because of the low ceiling, he used an 18-inch step stool to reach it. After assembling the stool and climbing up, the situation rapidly deteriorated.
I get up on the stool and as I’m reaching up with my second arm, the stool explodes,
Busch recounted.
Although Busch initially felt stable after the fall, his son Brexton quickly alerted him to a serious injury.
As soon as he said, ‘You’re bleeding,’ I look down, and it’s not like you’re bleeding like a nosebleed. It is like pouring. Like, you’re gushing. … I’m like, ‘This is hospital grade,’
Kyle Busch remarked.

An image shared on Samantha’s podcast revealed the extent of the injury—a deep gash on Busch’s right leg. Samantha immediately rushed him to the hospital, with his leg elevated on the car dashboard and wrapped in towels.
Initially, a physician assistant expressed hesitation to stitch the wound, knowing it belonged to a NASCAR driver and fearing any damage to the leg could impact his career.
When they lifted up his leg, he’s not kidding. This flap was down and it was just gushing,
Samantha said.
Medical Treatment and Recovery Timeline
Upon hospital examination, the doctor confirmed that no foreign objects, such as porcelain fragments, were embedded in the wound, and the laceration narrowly missed muscle tissue.
Just sliced the fat, folks. Didn’t even get a muscle,
Busch explained.
The injury required 24 stitches to close the wound. Both Kyle and Samantha expressed relief that the incident happened shortly before the Cook Out Clash, rather than during the heat of the competitive season.
Thank God, though, because this was less than a week out before Bowman Gray. Like, you would not have been racing,
Samantha told Kyle Busch.
Impact of the Injury on Busch’s Racing Season
Despite the severity of the injury, Busch was able to recover quickly enough to compete, notably qualifying on the pole for the Daytona 500 for the first time in his career. However, his performance in the 2026 season has faced challenges.
The Richard Childress Racing driver has yet to secure a top-10 finish through the first four races, with his best result being 12th place at Circuit of The Americas. Currently, he sits 20th in the points standings, showing a difficult start to the season amid recovery.
Possible Ramifications for the Season Ahead
Kyle Busch’s near career-halting leg injury highlights the unpredictable risks even athletes face off the track. While he managed to return in time for the early season races, the physical and mental toll could influence his performance going forward. Observers will be watching closely to see how Busch’s recovery affects his competitiveness in upcoming events, especially as he seeks to regain form and climb the standings.
