Lando Norris enters the new Formula One season feeling like the strongest version of himself as he aims to defend his drivers’ world championship. Despite his confidence, the McLaren driver recognizes that significant improvements are necessary in his car if they want to challenge top rivals in the upcoming season opener in Melbourne. After a season of ups and downs, Norris clinched his first championship last year by overtaking Max Verstappen.
Confidence from Past Success Bolsters Performance Outlook
At 26 years old, Norris expressed a calm assurance rooted in his prior achievement. He recalls the struggles he faced throughout the previous campaign but emphasized how winning the title has reinforced his belief in his abilities. However, he acknowledged that defending the crown involves fresh challenges and is not simply a repeat of last year’s performance.
McLaren Faces Pressure to Close Gap to Leading Teams
During a press conference in Bahrain, Norris highlighted that McLaren is still trailing behind the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull in terms of race pace. He explained that pushing the car harder to keep up leads to greater wear and degradation, indicating the team’s current limitations. Norris said,
“At the minute, we’re a little bit off, so to match the race pace of some of the others, we have to push a bit more and then we have more degradations.”
The driver admitted there is no pressure beyond doing his best but emphasized that the team must enhance the car’s performance to approach the season opener with greater confidence.
“I would love to (win), but I don’t think there’s like a responsibility. Always in life I’ll do my best to defend it and continue it, but it’s a new season with loads of new challenges,”
he stated.
Looking Ahead: Committed to Team Effort and Season-Long Battle
Norris stressed the importance of teamwork and consistency across the long season, aiming to capitalize on the foundation he and McLaren have built.
“That’s a good thing, but it’s a long season and I’ll make sure I do my part. Together as a team we’ll make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity to do it again,”
he declared.
His hopeful yet realistic approach signals a determined campaign ahead, as McLaren endeavors to raise their competitiveness against formidable opponents while Norris seeks to repeat his success in defending the Formula One title.
