Lando Norris prepared for his Formula 1 title defense in 2026 with a cautious outlook as the sport heads to the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit. Despite being the reigning champion, Norris and McLaren find themselves in an uncertain position after the introduction of new regulations, with their car lacking the pace needed to immediately challenge the frontrunners.
The McLaren MCL40 has shown promising performance, keeping the team among the top four contenders, but it remains clear that the squad is not yet at the level required to fight for victories. This contrasts sharply with the previous season when Norris and his team were firmly in winning form.
Norris Addresses Pressure and Expectations for the Upcoming Season
Speaking to Motorsport Week, Norris downplayed the idea that he carries a heavy responsibility to defend his title, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the new season. He said,
“Honestly, I don’t think there’s a responsibility… I mean, there’s a responsibility always in life.”
He added that the team needs significant improvements to the car to feel competitive at the start of the campaign:
“At the minute we have to, from what we see, improve the car quite a bit if we want to compete a bit more, to be confident for the first race.”
Confidence Grown But Acknowledgment of a Tough Road Ahead
Although Norris ruled out being a favorite to win at the season opener, he conveyed a strong sense of confidence gained from becoming champion last year. He explained,
“I feel confident. I feel better than I’ve ever done,”
noting that achieving the title boosted his belief in repeating the feat. He continued,
“So it’s reassuring to know that I’ve done it once and therefore I believe I can do it again. So that’s a good thing. But it’s a long season, and I’ll make sure I do my part. And together as a team, we’ll make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity to do it again.”
With the 2026 season just beginning, McLaren and Norris face a significant test of their resilience and adaptability. Their progress in matching the performance of leading teams like Red Bull will determine whether Norris can mount a credible defense of his championship, setting the stage for a highly competitive and unpredictable season.
