British racing driver Lando Norris experienced rally driving for the first time on a frozen lake in Sweden, thanks to a collaboration between his and Oliver Solberg’s shared sponsor, Monster Energy. The event brought together Norris, the winner of the latest Rally Monte-Carlo and a Formula 1 star, alongside Petter Solberg, the 2003 World Rally Championship winner. After practicing in a standard Volvo, Norris switched to a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 to navigate the icy terrain with Oliver Solberg, the current WRC2 World Champion, acting as his co-driver and guide.
Adjusting to Rally Techniques with Expert Guidance
Norris described the experience as an eye-opener, highlighting the stark contrast between rally driving and traditional Formula 1 racing.
“I’m learning a lot; it’s a completely different style of driving from what I’m used to,”
he remarked. Although he had some ice driving experience, controlling a rally car presented new challenges. Norris credited Oliver Solberg for offering valuable advice throughout the session, making it an enjoyable learning process.
“I’m having a lot of fun; when I’m in Formula 1 you have to be so serious and professional, here I can have a bit of fun and we’re having a blast!”
he added.
A Memorable Day on the Ice with Drifting and Competition
The day wasn’t just about instruction; it also featured laps in specialized drift cars designed for sliding on ice, blending fun with skill development. This unique opportunity allowed two distinct motorsport worlds—Formula 1 and rallying—to come together in a rare crossover. Petter Solberg expressed admiration for Norris’s rapid progress, sharing,
“I’m really impressed. Towards the end of the day, he really started to push hard. I was driving behind him in the drift cars, and I couldn’t catch him, he was really good!”
The Significance of Norris’s Rally Driving Debut
Lando Norris’s rally driving debut in Sweden highlights his willingness to embrace new motorsport challenges beyond the racetrack of Formula 1. Supported by figures like Oliver and Petter Solberg, Norris’s performance not only impressed rally veterans but also showcased his adaptability and enthusiasm for learning. This experience may influence future explorations in diverse racing disciplines, strengthening his overall driving skills and broadening his competitive horizons.
