Leclerc Warns Ferrari Rivals Are Hiding True Pace in Bahrain Test

Charles Leclerc has raised doubts about the genuine speed of Ferrari’s rivals following the initial pre-season Formula 1 tests in Bahrain. Speaking in early 2026, the Ferrari driver indicated that while his team may currently sit behind two others in pace, the true standings remain uncertain amid strategic concealment by competitors.

Ferrari, preparing for a season viewed as critical to its comeback, is facing intense scrutiny after an underwhelming 2025 campaign. With new regulations shaking up the grid, the team aims to recover momentum through improved performance of its SF-26 model, which debuted at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya before testing in Bahrain.

Leclerc Leads Testing Day but Sees Hidden Strength in Other Teams

During the second day of Bahrain testing, Leclerc recorded the fastest lap times, yet he remained cautious analyzing rival teams’ results. He suggested that many teams might be deliberately masking their vehicle capabilities, commenting,

“I think everybody is trying to throw the ball to the other guys,”

highlighting the uncertainty in assessing pace under new hybrid engine rules.

He further explained that the complexities of the latest car regulations allow teams to implement subtle changes that obscure the real potential of their cars.

“It was difficult with the previous generation of cars, but now… there are so many small tweaks that you can do. You can hide the real potential of the car in many different ways now,”

Leclerc remarked, emphasizing the tactical layers teams exploit in modern F1.

Ferrari’s Reliability a Strength Amid Stiff Competition

Leclerc remains positive about Ferrari’s operational stability, noting the team has experienced no mechanical issues during testing. He stated,

“Everything stacks up with what we expected. So that’s a good base to then start to work on and to improve,”

indicating the team is focused on maximizing progress ahead of the season’s opening race in Australia.

However, the challenge is formidable as rival outfits Mercedes and Red Bull show strong performances. Leclerc acknowledged the power unit advancements by Red Bull, saying,

“I think Red Bull have shown very impressive things power unit-wise since the start of the test, especially here.”

Leclerc Suspects Mercedes of Concealing Their Full Potential

The Ferrari driver also suspects that Mercedes is deliberately masking their actual strength, possibly utilizing the power unit regulations to their benefit.

“Mercedes are showing some very impressive things as well sometimes, but I would say they are hiding a lot more. I would expect them to especially be a bit ahead of us,”

he observed, voicing concern about the continued competitiveness of the Silver Arrows.

McLaren Remains a Puzzling Factor on the Grid

The mystery surrounding McLaren’s capabilities adds further depth to the competitive landscape. Leclerc admitted he finds their performance difficult to evaluate but has placed McLaren behind Red Bull and Mercedes for now.

“The McLaren is a little bit more difficult to understand, but from where I stand now it’s Red Bull, Mercedes in front and then us,”

he said, suggesting the gap may still be manageable.

Ferrari’s Ambitions Ahead of the New Season

As the opening race in Australia draws near, Ferrari aims to disrupt the current hierarchy of Formula 1. With Charles Leclerc at the helm, the team is preparing to challenge both Red Bull and Mercedes, though the concealed pace of rivals leaves an element of unpredictability. This cautious yet determined outlook underscores the tense anticipation gripping the paddock as the 2026 season begins, with Ferrari’s ability to reclaim top status remaining to be seen.
