After months dedicated to recovering from injury, Marc Marquez has made a surprising return to MotoGP testing, riding with a distinctive pink-tinted helmet due to a manufacturing error. The Spanish world champion set an impressive fastest lap time of 1’57.018 during his first day back on the bike, signaling a swift recovery and readiness as the new MotoGP season approaches. While Marquez cautioned that the championship will be long and filled with variables, his rapid pace has reignited hopes about his comeback prospects.
Initial Feelings and Physical Readiness in Testing
Marquez’s initial impressions reflected cautious optimism. With Ducati’s assistance, he limited his testing time in the morning to focus on both regaining comfort on the bike and evaluating his physical condition after such a challenging recovery period. He emphasized that with the engines being frozen, the bike’s behavior remains consistent, so the foremost goal is to ensure his physical preparedness ahead of the season opener in Buriram, Thailand.
“if I had known I would arrive in this condition, I would have signed up for it,”
Marquez shared, illustrating his surprise at how well he performed initially.
Although Marquez has yet to finalize his contract with Ducati, he remains positive about the negotiations.
“We’re getting closer and closer, and I’m happy.”
Managing Fatigue and Building Endurance
During the first day, Marquez noted he felt stiff in the morning but experienced improvement as the day progressed. He deliberately kept his runs short to avoid overexertion, recognizing that pushing too hard too soon after injury could be detrimental.

“I felt very stiff in the morning, then I loosened up in the afternoon, but we did all short runs to avoid too much fatigue. I know from experience that I tend to push too hard on the first day, and when you come back from an injury like this, you suffer a lot. So today we only did a few laps at a time, and tomorrow I hope to have the same feeling. The goal is clearly to be 100% for the start of the season. Three months will have passed, and I feel good for short runs. If the sensations are good, the speed will come; if they’re not, it won’t. This will be the best training for Buriram, then after the tests, I’ll analyze my weaknesses, but as a first day, it went well.”
Technical Observations and Bike Adaptation Still in Progress
Marquez acknowledged that while he gained some insights during the day, he is not yet fully ready to make significant improvements or adjustments on the bike’s setup. His focus remains on regaining the essential feeling both physically and technically before refining details for the demanding 22-race season ahead.
“Not really, I understood a few things, but I’m not ready yet. I was optimistic, but today it cost me more than normal, so since I’m not feeling 100% yet, I asked Ducati for some time this morning to get back the feeling for the bike and my body. In the afternoon, I felt better, and we started trying a few things, but since the engine is the same as last year, the character of the bike is very similar, and with so much rubber on the track, everything works well, but to prepare for a 22-race championship, you also have to pay attention to other aspects to have a good base. For me, in addition to being a technical test, it’s also a physical test in preparation for Thailand. Tomorrow we’ll see if we can work more on aerodynamics and other aspects.”
Unexpected Early Pace and Competition Insights
Despite some reservations, Marquez was surprised at how quickly he found himself at the top of the timing sheets. While speed on this day was encouraging, he downplayed it as not the ultimate measure of readiness or championship potential.
“No, it was a surprise, but it’s not the most important thing. If someone had told me two months ago that I would be in this position, I would have signed up for it. It’s better than I expected. In the last part of the tests, I put on new tyres, like Di Giannantonio and Vinales, but there are also Alex and Pecco who rode fast in the hottest hours. For me, Malaysia is the same as always: you have to try to be in the leading group. Last year, Pecco and Alex were much faster here, but I know what it’s like here in Malaysia, and I know what I need to be competitive throughout the season.”
Marquez remains mindful of the challenges ahead, especially as other top riders show strong form during testing sessions.
Competitors’ Form and Championship Prospects
When asked about Francesco Bagnaia’s performance, Marquez recognized him as a formidable competitor and title contender, along with rider Alex Rins.
“Pecco is a very fast rider, and last year he also started the season well. He will be one of the riders fighting for the title. Alex was also fast in these tests. The first day is challenging, but it doesn’t matter much who is first, second, or third. The important thing is to have the right pace, feel good, and be among the top five or six. When we go to different circuits with less rubber on the track, that’s when you can better understand the potential. Every weekend is different from the next.”
Ongoing Contract Negotiations with Ducati
Although Marquez has not yet signed a new contract with Ducati, discussions appear to be progressing positively. He emphasized carefully evaluating all aspects before finalizing the agreement.
“We’re getting closer step by step. As I said from the beginning, I want to be able to evaluate everything, but we’re getting closer every time, and I’m very happy about that.”
The Road Ahead: Preparing for a Long Championship
Marc Marquez’s rapid recovery and pace in preliminary testing provide an encouraging sign for the upcoming MotoGP season. His focus remains balancing physical health, technical adaptation, and endurance as he prepares to compete in the demanding 22-race calendar starting in Buriram, Thailand. While contract details with Ducati are still finalizing, Marquez’s performance suggests he will remain a central figure in the championship battle. Observers will watch closely as Marquez continues testing and sharpens his form, with expectations high for his impact throughout the season.
