Marc Marquez has advised Toprak Razgatlioglu to remain patient rather than make hasty judgments about the difficulties Yamaha is facing this MotoGP season. The reigning MotoGP and World Superbike champions will compete head-to-head for the first time at this weekend’s Thailand Grand Prix in Buriram, with Marquez favored to win while Razgatlioglu looks set to struggle in scoring points based on the latest pre-season results. This situation places significant attention on Yamaha’s ongoing challenges and riders’ future decisions.
Yamaha’s Continued Performance Issues and Engine Challenges
Yamaha continues to lag behind other manufacturers, maintaining its position as the slowest team on the grid, as seen in the previous season. Their transition from an inline four-cylinder engine to a more basic V4 configuration has further distanced Yamaha from its competitors, increasing concern about the team’s competitiveness. This technical setback complicates the situation for riders trying to adapt and extract performance from the new bike this year.
Marquez Comments on Fabio Quartararo and Razgatlioglu’s Yamaha Futures
At the pre-race press conference on Thursday, Marquez addressed the struggles that Toprak Razgatlioglu and 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo are experiencing with Yamaha machinery. Quartararo is widely known to be moving to Honda in 2027 after losing confidence in Yamaha’s development progress, which adds uncertainty to Razgatlioglu’s outlook.
“Look, there are many times in sports, and especially in motorsports, that it doesn’t all depend on the rider or the machine,”
Marquez said, via AS.
“It’s a combination, and you need to follow your instincts and find the best project for the moment you’re in.”
He added,
“In the end, you might think, ‘Yes, you have to wait, work on this project and this bike.’ But ultimately, the years go by, and our careers aren’t very long, so both will have to decide what their priorities are.”
Marquez specifically noted the different situations between the two riders:
“But in Quartararo’s case, it’s different because he has to decide, if he hasn’t already, which future option he wants. And in Toprak’s case, he has to wait a bit to see what happens, since he’s barely been in the championship.”
Toprak Razgatlioglu’s Perspective Ahead of Thailand Grand Prix
On media day, Razgatlioglu admitted that he is avoiding focusing on the timing sheets for now and instead concentrates on adapting to MotoGP’s unique demands. Although many advise him that it will take time to become competitive, his natural impatience surfaces given his history of dominance in World Superbike. Acknowledging Yamaha may not reach full competitiveness until next year, he appears ready to be patient. Additionally, the switch to Pirelli tires, which he is familiar with from his Superbike career, may offer some advantage as he adjusts.
Concerns Over Razgatlioglu’s Motivation and Future in MotoGP
Despite his positive outlook, former World Superbike champion Neil Hodgson has expressed worries that Razgatlioglu might “start to hate” MotoGP before the season concludes. The demanding calendar, featuring 44 races including Sprint events, coupled with Yamaha’s underperforming bike, could prevent Razgatlioglu from fully showcasing his talent. These difficulties place significant pressure on the rider and Yamaha to improve the bike’s performance to retain competitive spirit within the championship.
