Fernando Alonso acknowledges that Max Verstappen faces his most challenging defense of a Formula 1 world championship in 2025, especially as McLaren gains momentum. Alonso’s remarks come ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, highlighting the shifting dynamics in the title race.
Alonso Recognizes Verstappen’s Resilience Despite Rising Competition
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Alonso was asked if Verstappen still has a realistic chance at securing a fifth world title after a difficult run of recent races and McLaren’s visible rise. The question followed the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, where McLaren outperformed Red Bull in both qualifying and race pace, signaling a potential turnaround in the season’s balance of power.
Alonso praised Verstappen’s fighting spirit and skill, saying,
“You don’t rule him out because he’s another driving genius,”
and added,
“And since we’re talking about Adrian Newey, who could do special things, I think Verstappen can do them too. He’s been doing it this year as well.”
McLaren Surge Poses Significant Challenge to Red Bull’s Dominance
While Verstappen is known for thriving under pressure, Alonso highlighted how the 2025 season presents his toughest challenge yet. Red Bull remains competitive, but McLaren’s drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, have consistently outpaced the reigning champions across multiple tracks, pushing both their team and Verstappen hard.
Alonso admitted,
“This year is surely the toughest of all the championships he’s entered,”
and emphasized,
“And McLaren is probably the biggest favourite.”
Currently, Oscar Piastri leads the championship standings with 161 points, closely followed by teammate Lando Norris with 158 points. Verstappen ranks third with 136 points, reflecting how the title race has tightened considerably.
Alonso Cautions Against Underestimating Verstappen’s Determination
Despite the uphill battle Verstappen faces, Alonso warned against dismissing the Dutch driver’s chances. Reinforcing Verstappen’s formidable form, he stated again,
“He’s been doing special things this year too,”
underscoring the relentless competitiveness that Verstappen maintains even when challenged.
As the 2025 season progresses, this intense contest between McLaren’s emerging strength and Verstappen’s proven excellence will likely define the championship’s narrative, making for an unpredictable and thrilling title fight.
