During the early phase of pre-season testing in Bahrain, Max Verstappen addressed recent remarks suggesting that the new Formula 1 cars resemble “Formula E on steroids.” The Dutch driver expressed his views amid the reset of technical regulations and the evolving format of F1 vehicles. His comments sparked discussions across the paddocks of both Formula 1 and Formula E, the latter competing in Jeddah for its fourth and fifth race rounds.
Defending His Views Amidst Mixed Reactions
On the second week of Bahrain testing, Verstappen spoke openly about the controversy his statements caused. He clarified to media outlets including Motorsport Week that he was simply expressing his personal opinion, emphasizing the freedom of speech in the sport.
“So I think we live in a free world, free speech, and that’s what I felt,”
Verstappen explained.
“Not everyone needs to feel like that, but that’s how I felt. And then it also doesn’t matter, of course, what other people have to say about that. I got a question and I shared my opinion. I think that I’m allowed to do.”
So it’s not about receiving pushback or whatever, I was just being honest.

Maintaining Distinct Identities for Formula 1 and Formula E
When asked about the possibility of Formula E drivers transitioning to Formula 1 due to further electrification, Verstappen expressed his reservations. He hopes that F1 stays distinct from the all-electric series rather than merging or aligning too closely.
“Well, let’s hope not,” he stated, adding that while many Formula E drivers have the talent to succeed in Formula 1, the two championships should remain separate.
“I want us to actually stay away from that and be Formula 1. So don’t increase the battery, actually get rid of that and focus on a nice engine and have Formula E as Formula E, because that’s what they are about.”
He also acknowledged the competitive appeal of Formula E cars, having spoken with some friends involved in the series.
But let them be Formula E. We should stay Formula 1 and let’s try not to mix that.

Respecting Formula E’s Position While Holding Firm
Despite the strong opinions, Verstappen’s relationship with Formula E remains respectful. He is known to have friendships within the FE paddock and respects the championship’s CEO, Jeff Dodds. His comments were not intended as a dismissal of Formula E’s importance but as an assertion of Formula 1’s unique identity.
The ongoing transformation of Formula 1 through technical updates continues to generate intense debate, and Verstappen’s stance highlights the tensions surrounding the sport’s evolution. His views signal a desire to preserve the legacy and character of Formula 1 amid changing competitive landscapes.
