Max Verstappen Rules Out Red Bull Exit Until 2028 Season

Max Verstappen has firmly dismissed any rumors of leaving Red Bull before the 2028 Formula 1 season, reinforcing his commitment amid ongoing speculation about his future. The Dutch driver spoke openly about honoring his existing contract with the Milton Keynes-based team and expressed his intention to remain loyal despite recent challenges within the squad.

Red Bull has experienced significant departures over the past two seasons, including key figures like Helmut Marko and Christian Horner, which have fueled uncertainty. These upheavals coincided with the team’s sharp performance decline during the 2024 season, marked by struggles with an erratic RB20 car.

Leadership Changes and Internal Challenges Shake Red Bull

Following Christian Horner’s dismissal in July after an internal investigation, Red Bull’s leadership quickly shifted with Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley, Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, and adviser Helmut Marko all exiting in rapid succession. These changes have unsettled the team’s stability, prompting speculation about Verstappen’s next move.

Despite this uncertainty and rumors of possible negotiations with rival teams such as Mercedes and Aston Martin, Verstappen emphasized his determination to stay put.

“I’m 28 now and I have a contract with Red Bull until 2028,”

he told Blick.

“I want to fulfil that contract. At this point in time, I’m ruling out a change of team.”

Verstappen also reflected on the departure of Marko, his longtime mentor, acknowledging the personal impact.

“It’s a shame that I won’t have my friend and mentor Helmut Marko by my side in 2026. I’ll miss him.”

Revitalizing Red Bull’s Performance in the 2024 Season Finale

After a difficult start to the second half of the 2024 season, Verstappen trailed McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri by a substantial 104 points following the summer break. However, with Laurent Mekies assuming leadership from Horner, Red Bull initiated a major technical turnaround.

The team introduced a vital floor upgrade to Verstappen’s RB21, which sparked a remarkable recovery from the Italian Grand Prix onward. This technical boost enabled Verstappen to claim victories at Monza, Baku, Austin, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, closing the points gap dramatically.

Despite his dominant late-season form, Verstappen narrowly missed out on a fifth consecutive championship, finishing just two points behind Norris. He acknowledged the team’s relentless efforts to refine the car and provide him with a competitive edge amid the internal turmoil.

When asked if he felt proud of Red Bull’s turnaround, Verstappen replied,

“Because in the midst of the turmoil surrounding the change of team boss, no one would have believed we could do it. Before this final sprint, we were still 104 points behind.”

What Verstappen’s Loyalty Means for Formula 1’s Future

Verstappen’s decision to remain with Red Bull until 2028 signals stability for a team that has recently faced significant organizational turbulence. His loyalty also underscores his belief in the squad’s ability to rebound and compete at the highest level despite setbacks.

This commitment could influence the competitive dynamics of Formula 1, especially amid ongoing leadership changes and pressure from rival teams like Mercedes and Aston Martin. As Red Bull continues to rebuild around Verstappen, all eyes will be on how the team adapts to maintain its position within the sport’s evolving landscape.
