Max Verstappen has remained notably reserved publicly, yet his calm attitude has drawn attention as Red Bull integrates its first in-house engine, developed with Ford. This quiet confidence from the four-time World Champion is significant as Red Bull Powertrains navigates the challenges of its new Formula 1 power unit.
Bernie Collins, speaking about the atmosphere within Red Bull, notes that Verstappen appears much more relaxed than expected despite the surrounding speculation and skepticism.
Early Testing Reveals Promising Reliability for RBPT-Ford Engine
The RBPT-Ford power unit completed its initial major testing with 622 laps at Barcelona, shared between Red Bull and Racing Bulls, following an earlier Imola shakedown. The engine’s performance proved reliable, running smoothly without technical issues during the Barcelona test sessions.
The only significant interruption came due to Isack Hadjar’s crash on the second day, which was unrelated to engine performance, allowing the team to focus fully on assessing the powertrain’s capabilities.
Industry Expectations Versus Internal Reality at Red Bull
Prior to testing, many anticipated Red Bull might fall behind established engine manufacturers like Ferrari and Mercedes due to the team’s new status in powertrain development. However, Collins suggests that this widespread narrative may not reflect the reality inside the team.
On the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Collins highlighted Verstappen’s demeanor as a subtle but clear sign of internal faith in the unit’s potential.

“There was a lot of noise in the paddock last year that this engine was really going to struggle,”
Collins explained.
“It wasn’t going to be as good as the others, and I guess the story was maybe different internally at Red Bull, but we are starting to see that confidence come out a little bit. Max is sounding very relaxed, and I think you can tell by their posture, he’s not just saying the words, he is looking very relaxed. He does say that the car has room for improvement, that’s what happens in the first test of any season, but he does look quietly confident.”
“He’s got that little smile he sometimes carries when he is in these interviews, that he knows much more than we do.”
Implications for Red Bull’s Future and 2026 Formula 1 Power Unit Ambitions
Red Bull is venturing into uncharted territory as it prepares for the 2026 regulation changes by developing its own power units. Verstappen’s steady attitude indicates the team’s growing trust in their engineering progress and the RBPT-Ford collaboration. This early confidence could prove crucial in competing against powerhouses like Ferrari and Mercedes over the coming seasons.
With the program off to a reliable start and Verstappen’s measured optimism hinting at more developments to come, Red Bull’s efforts could reshape the competitive landscape in Formula 1 engine manufacturing as they gear up for the next regulatory cycle.
