George Russell is gearing up for what he hopes will be a fierce title battle with his long-time Formula One rival, Max Verstappen, in the upcoming season. Their rivalry has been marked by several intense on-track incidents and sharp exchanges off it, with Verstappen calling Russell a “d***head,” a “loser,” and a “liar,” while the British driver has accused Verstappen of being a “bully.” This year, Russell sees the chance to challenge Verstappen more seriously thanks to improvements in his Mercedes car and engine.
Verstappen, a four-time Formula One world champion who narrowly missed securing a fifth title by just two points last year, remains the benchmark in the sport. Meanwhile, Russell has yet to have the machinery capable of directly competing with Verstappen, but Mercedes’ confident new power unit compliant with the 2026 regulations may be a game changer.
Russell’s Determination to Let Performance Speak
Speaking to selected members of the media, including Express Sport, Russell expressed his eagerness to settle scores on the track this season.
“I’d love for it to turn out that way,”
the 27-year-old said.
“I do want to go head to head with Max.”
As the pre-season favourite for the drivers’ championship, largely due to Mercedes’ promising power unit, Russell is aware of the weight of expectations but is not letting it alter his mindset. He referenced Lando Norris, who was also tipped to contend strongly last year and delivered solid performances for McLaren, but Russell stressed his own focus remains the same.
“Lando had a great season last year but, no, it didn’t add any more pressure. I think probably the fans and people are expecting it to potentially be Mercedes versus McLaren, because there is a lot of anticipation that Mercedes will clearly have the best power unit, but it seems like the other power unit manufacturers have done a good job,”
Russell said.
He acknowledged Verstappen’s continued dominance thanks to Red Bull’s strong car design.
“We know that Red Bull have always had an amazing car, even through the years of dominance of Mercedes – it was their engine that was letting them down, not their car. And we obviously know how good Max is, so I think he’s very much going to be in the fight this year.”
“And that’s great. You obviously wish that you’d have a slightly easier time of it, but it should never be easy. If you’re going to win, you want to have fought for it and won it fair and square on track.”

Mercedes Seeks to End Frustrations from Previous Seasons
Mercedes’ dominance in Formula One has waned since 2022 after a record eight consecutive constructors’ championships. Issues like “porpoising” and other technical problems debilitated their cars, yielding only seven Grand Prix victories in the last four seasons combined. Team principal Toto Wolff has been blunt in his critique of recent cars, calling some of them “divas” and “s***boxes.”
Borrowing the blunt vocabulary of his team boss, Russell expressed cautious optimism about Mercedes’ new car as the team prepares for Formula One’s new era.
“We’ve only driven the car for three days, and it’s still very early days. But, quoting Toto, it doesn’t look like it’s a turd, which is a bonus. In the early days like this, you kind of know if it’s going to be a really bad car and you can highlight those negatives early on. We don’t believe it is. Is it a car that can produce a world championship? It’s still way too early to see.”

Competition Intensifies Among Power Unit Suppliers
Russell believes the competitive gaps across teams may be narrower than expected when the season kicks off in Melbourne next month. He praised the progress made by some teams, particularly highlighting a new team using the Red Bull power unit that impressed with both performance and reliability during testing.
“We’ve been quite surprised by what we’ve seen from some of our rivals, especially on the Red Bull power unit side – that looks very impressive, considering they are a completely new outfit. And reliable as well, so kudos to them. We’ve had a very reliable test, but we’ll have to wait and see,”
Russell said.
Reflecting positively on pre-season testing in Barcelona, he explained that the car’s behaviour aligned well with simulator data, a consistency Mercedes hasn’t enjoyed since 2021.
“We’re ticking the boxes of everything that we want to tick.”
“But we can’t discount our rivals because, as I said, there was a lot of talk around the Red Bull power unit not being up to standard year one. From what we’ve seen so far, they’ve definitely delivered. The Ferrari power unit looks reliable, they did lots of laps not far behind us over the course of the test and from a power unit side Haas did loads of laps as well with the Ferrari engine so the truth is that there could be a good fight on our hands but we’re satisfied with what we’ve experienced so far.”

The Outlook for the Upcoming Formula One Season
As Formula One transitions into a new rules cycle with Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, and others all showing promising signs, the title race promises to be highly competitive. Russell, backed by team principal Toto Wolff and strengthened by an evolving power unit, appears ready to challenge Verstappen’s formidable reign. The intense rivalry between Russell and Verstappen is set to add further drama to the season, with the sport’s fans anticipating a battle that will be fought hard and fairly on the track.
With Melbourne hosting the opening race, the weeks ahead will reveal whether Mercedes’ improvements suffice to reclaim dominance or whether Verstappen and Red Bull will continue their streak. This season could redefine the championship dynamics and bring renewed excitement to Formula One’s global audience.
