Four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen will participate in the 24 Hours of Nuerburgring endurance race this May, driving with his own Mercedes GT3 sportscar team backed by Red Bull. The Dutch driver’s involvement in this prestigious event highlights his expanding focus beyond F1, aiming to tackle one of motorsport’s most challenging races.
The 28-year-old Verstappen joins fellow drivers Lucas Auer from Austria, Jules Gounon from Andorra, and Spaniard Daniel Juncadella, sharing driving time in a Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing car marked with his familiar F1 number three.
Preparation and Scheduling for the Nuerburgring Challenge
Mercedes AMG Motorsport confirmed Verstappen will take part in a preparatory event on March 21 at the Nuerburgring, a race rescheduled to accommodate his Formula One commitments in China and Japan. The 24-hour race on May 16-17 is strategically placed between the Miami Grand Prix on May 3 and the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on May 24.
Verstappen’s prior experience on the demanding Nuerburgring Nordschleife track, combined with his recent win at the NLS9 event last year, adds to his readiness for this endurance challenge. He highlighted the significance of his preparation, emphasizing lessons learned that will benefit his performance at Nuerburgring.
The Historic Nuerburgring Course and Race Format
The race circuit integrates the legendary Nordschleife section — often dubbed the ‘Green Hell’ for its difficulty during the 1960s and 70s Formula One era — with the modern Grand Prix layout, forming an extensive 25-kilometer loop. Drivers share the car in shifts, requiring stamina, skill, and team coordination over the full 24 hours.
Verstappen’s Perspective on the Nuerburgring Endeavor
The Nuerburgring is a special place. There’s no other track like it. The 24h Nuerburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now,
Verstappen said.
Last year, I was able to get my DMSB Permit Nordschleife and participate in NLS9, that we won. That preparation is very valuable, as we have learned a lot that we can take into our programme this year with NLS2 and the 24-hour race.
Implications for Verstappen’s Racing Career
Aside from his Formula One commitments, Verstappen has expressed interest in seeking enjoyment in other racing formats, especially following critical remarks about the current F1 car regulations and engine rules. His participation at Nuerburgring showcases a willingness to broaden his motorsport horizons and possibly influence his future racing endeavors.
