Max Verstappen’s Surprising Admiration for Fernando Alonso

Max Verstappen, known for his exceptional talent in Formula 1, expressed profound admiration for Fernando Alonso, the veteran Spanish driver with an extensive career in motorsport. Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Verstappen highlighted Alonso’s remarkable persistence and achievements both in Formula 1 and other racing disciplines, underscoring why Alonso remains a standout figure in the sport.

Verstappen and Alonso have shared the F1 grid for nearly 11 years, often as fierce rivals in a sport where experience and youth collide. Although Alonso was already beyond his prime at Verstappen’s debut, their recent competition peaked during the 2023 season. While Alonso sought podium finishes, Verstappen captured several race wins, showcasing their differing trajectories yet shared commitment to racing at the highest level.

Verstappen’s Respect for Alonso’s Endurance and Versatility

Discussing Alonso’s continuing drive within Formula 1, Verstappen praised not only the Spaniard’s sustained motivation but also his ventures beyond F1, including endurance racing and challenging events like the Dakar Rally. Verstappen described Alonso’s racing career as “pretty insane,” reflecting genuine admiration for his ability to excel across varied motorsport arenas despite advancing age.

“I get on very well with Fernando. I admire him a lot: how he is as a person; [as] a racer at his age to still be that motivated, to perform in Formula 1; but at the same time, also what he has done before – doing this, going into endurance, even doing Dakar, for example. It’s pretty insane.” (via The Race)

The 2025 season marks Verstappen’s 11th year competing in F1, contrasting with Alonso’s 23rd season, which includes a hiatus in 2019 and 2020 when Alonso focused on endurance racing. Over his extensive career, Alonso from Oviedo has accumulated 420 race starts, two world titles (2005 and 2006), 32 race victories, 22 pole positions, and 106 podium finishes, cementing his reputation as one of the sport’s greats.

Alonso’s High Praise for Verstappen’s Current Form

Earlier in the 2025 season, Fernando Alonso reciprocated Verstappen’s compliments by acknowledging the Dutch driver as the current standard-bearer in F1. After securing pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix by narrowly edging out Lando Norris, Alonso praised Verstappen’s skill and consistency despite a car that was not always at peak competitiveness.

“He’s an outstanding driver, and he’s proving it every weekend, so hats off to him,” Alonso said following qualifying.

“The lap he did is only down to him. The car is clearly not at the level to fight for pole or even top five. but he manages to do those magical laps and have magical weekends. At the moment, he’s the best. He’s the reference for all of us, and we need to keep improving to reach that level,” Alonso added.

Verstappen capitalized on this momentum by winning the Japanese GP, denying Norris a victory and registering his first win of the 2025 season. With 230 points after 16 races and three sprint events, Verstappen currently stands third in the Drivers’ Championship behind Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, remaining a potent contender as the season progresses.

The Lasting Impact of Mutual Respect Among F1’s Elite

The mutual admiration between Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso highlights the blend of rivalry and respect that enriches Formula 1’s competitive landscape. Verstappen’s recognition of Alonso’s versatility and longevity, coupled with Alonso’s praise for Verstappen’s extraordinary talent, showcases how these drivers push each other to higher standards.
