Max Verstappen faces a daunting challenge in his pursuit of a fifth consecutive Formula 1 World Championship, as he trails significant points behind leaders Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Despite this, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes the Dutch driver retains a real chance to stage a remarkable comeback and equal Michael Schumacher’s record streak of five titles in a row. This ongoing battle highlights the tension gripping the championship battle in the final phase of the season.
Verstappen’s Recent Results Spark Optimism at McLaren
Although Verstappen currently has 230 points, placing him 94 points behind Piastri and 63 behind Norris, his recent form has caught the attention of rival teams. Following back-to-back pole positions and a victory at Monza, plus another pole in Baku, indications are that Red Bull might be entering a strong late-season phase. Stella warned against dismissing Verstappen’s chances prematurely, stressing that the team’s recent progress suggests a potential acceleration in performance.
“Well, the takeaway from the Monza race and the way we have reviewed this internally and set our mindset for the final third of the season, was that Red Bull’s performance in Monza should not be considered a one-off because of Monza, or because of low downforce,”
Stella explained.
Technical Gains Boost Red Bull’s Competitive Edge
Stella pointed to Red Bull’s recent technical innovations, such as a new car floor brought to Monza and revised setup strategies, as key factors elevating Verstappen’s competitiveness. The veteran engineer noted that these adjustments appear to have “unlocked performance,” giving Red Bull renewed speed and balance advantage, challenging McLaren and others for race wins and championship points.

“They have taken a new floor to Monza. They might be setting up their car slightly differently. We hear now Verstappen talking about grounding much more than it was doing before,”
Stella said.
“So they might have unlocked performance, and I would not be surprised at all that Red Bull continues the streak that they have started,”
he added.
“Pole position in Monza, victory, pole position here, Red Bull are a very serious contender to win races and a very serious contender for the drivers’ championship,”
Stella emphasized.
McLaren’s Sternest Warning: Verstappen Remains a Major Threat
When questioned if his claim was merely polite recognition or genuine belief, Stella insisted it was emphatic.
“A firm YES. Can you write it in capitals? Because it was quoted in capitals,”
he joked, underscoring the seriousness with which McLaren views Verstappen’s resurgence.
Although the points gap is substantial and just 224 points remain available in the season, Stella is confident that with perfect results from Verstappen, including victories in the eight remaining grands prix and success in three sprint races in Austin, Brazil, and Qatar, a championship turnaround remains mathematically feasible. However, for Verstappen to bridge that gap, his closest rival Piastri must score fewer than 131 points in the closing contests, a scenario that would require the Australian to consistently finish outside podium places.
Championship Implications and What Lies Ahead
The intense formula 1 championship battle is now entering its critical final stretch, with Verstappen’s comeback threat injecting uncertainty into the title race. The Dutch driver’s ability to capitalize on Red Bull’s technical advances and maintain his winning momentum will prove decisive against McLaren’s rising contenders, Piastri and Norris. This unfolding rivalry not only captivates fans but also underlines the strategic depth and resilience needed to claim the championship.
With the Azerbaijan Grand Prix still pending at the time of this report, all eyes remain on how the championship points unfold, as the stakes continue to escalate toward the season climax.
