Miguel Oliveira’s Stunning Wet Recovery Propels Him to 7th

Miguel Oliveira delivered a remarkable comeback during the rain-affected second race of the FIM Superbike World Championship at Phillip Island, finishing seventh after starting from the back of the grid in 21st place. Demonstrating his skill in challenging conditions, the Portuguese rider claimed this strong result on his debut weekend with the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, following an eighth-place finish in Saturday’s opening race.

Race Conditions Fuel High Attrition and Dramatic Outcomes

Persistent rain shaped Race 2 in Australia, creating slippery and hazardous track conditions that forced six riders to retire. Despite the chaos, Nicolò Bulega completed a flawless weekend by securing his third consecutive race win, finishing 11.336 seconds ahead of Axel Bassani, with Álvaro Bautista rounding out the podium 17.790 seconds behind Bulega. Oliveira crossed the line 32.135 seconds behind the leader, moving up from last place through consistent overtakes.

Technical Issues Force Oliveira to Start from the Back

Oliveira’s climb through the field was essential after several setbacks earlier in the day. While running ninth in the Superpole Race, a mechanical problem in the final laps dropped him to 18th, kicking him out of the top nine grid positions that determine starting spots for Race 2. This relegated him to the last place on the grid. These difficulties followed his qualifying crash on Saturday, which had already compelled him to start last in Race 1.

Measured and Tactical Advancement Amidst Difficult Conditions

From a starting position of 21st, Oliveira capitalized on his reputation for skillful riding in wet environments. By mid-race, he had advanced to tenth, maintaining a consistent and calculated pace while others struggled for grip. In a decisive move on the final lap, Oliveira overtook Iker Lecuona mere meters before the finish, securing seventh place and completing a 14-position recovery.

Points Accumulated Mark a Successful First Weekend in WorldSBK

After earning eight points for eighth place in Race 1 and nine points for his seventh-place finish in Race 2, Oliveira collected a total of 17 points across the weekend, though he scored no points in the Superpole Race. He currently stands eighth in the championship standings, 45 points behind leader Bulega, who has taken the maximum 62 points from the Australian round.

Looking Ahead to a Homecoming and a Chance to Build Momentum

The championship will continue on 29 March at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, giving Oliveira the advantage of competing on home soil. After demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and competitiveness in his transition from MotoGP to WorldSBK, Oliveira aims to leverage this encouraging start to improve his championship position. The Portimão round offers a promising opportunity to capitalize on his recent progress and momentum.
