The World Endurance Championship (WEC) has postponed the 1812 km of Qatar, originally scheduled for March 26-28 at the Losail circuit, because of the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized that
“safety and well-being are our top priority.”
This decision signals uncertainty for the MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix set for April 10-12, as it remains unclear whether the event can proceed as planned.
Possible Adjustments to the MotoGP Schedule
The MotoGP calendar faces challenges in accommodating the Qatar Grand Prix should it be postponed like the WEC race. With back-to-back double-headers planned in October—Japan and Indonesia followed by Australia and Malaysia—the schedule offers very little flexibility to insert an additional race later in the season. Organizers are weighing options to address this issue as the event date nears.
Alternatives Under Consideration for the Qatar Grand Prix
There has been speculation about reinstating the Argentine GP at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit as a replacement race. Since the MotoGP paddock will already be in the Americas for Brazil (March 20-22) and Texas (March 27-29), adding a South American event is logistically feasible, though it would increase costs for the teams. Another option involves holding an additional race in Europe to avoid a prolonged gap in the calendar.
Potential European Venue to Fill the Calendar Gap
Should the Qatar GP be canceled, the championship would face nearly a month without racing before the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez on April 24-26. Organizers might schedule an extra round at Jerez or another European circuit, a solution previously implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic to maintain calendar continuity.
Implications of a Possible Cancellation
If maintaining a calendar of 22 events proves impossible, the Qatar race could be canceled outright without replacement. The uncertainty surrounding the MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix reflects broader challenges for international sporting events amid regional instability, making the season’s progression dependent on ongoing developments in the Middle East and logistical planning across multiple continents.
