Former Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell has sold his extensive collection of racing memorabilia, including a gift signed by Lewis Hamilton, to raise funds for charity. The auction took place recently, with items fetching a total of £82,000, showcasing Mansell’s decision to part with his treasured belongings accumulated during his celebrated career.
Mansell, who clinched the World Drivers’ Championship in 1992 and retired in 1995, amassed memorabilia over six decades. Now at 72 years old, he chose to auction these items after closing his car dealership and museum in St Helier, Jersey, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Impact of the Pandemic and Personal Challenges
The closure of his museum and dealership prompted Mansell to liquidate his collection in support of charitable causes. He noted the importance of preserving his collection by entrusting it to fans worldwide for the future. The auction was conducted by BUDDS and raised £82,000 in total.
Mansell’s personal life was also affected, as his wife Roseanne underwent major heart surgery linked by Mansell to complications from the Covid-19 booster vaccine. Mansell described this as a “Covid tragedy” and expressed strong views on the vaccine’s adverse effects on some individuals.
“It was a Covid tragedy; the booster, as with many people, caused problems with one of the heart valves,”
Mansell said.
“Unfortunately, she had to have major surgery to try and fix it. Covid was criminal. Everyone should’ve been left to their own. All this vaccine caused a lot of people to have a lot of problems.”
Charity Beneficiary and Highlighted Memorabilia
The proceeds from the auction will support Youth UK, a charity where Mansell has served as president for 27 years. Among the notable items sold was a 1:2 scale Ferrari helmet signed and gifted by Lewis Hamilton, which sold for £1,800. Another significant piece was a pair of race-worn gloves from Michael Schumacher, fetching £2,200.
These items underline Mansell’s deep connections within the Formula 1 community and spotlight the value of memorabilia linked to iconic F1 figures such as Hamilton and Schumacher.
Reflections on Lewis Hamilton’s Current Career
Mansell also shared his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton’s debut season with Ferrari. Despite Hamilton finishing sixth in the World Drivers’ Championship, trailing winner Lando Norris by a large margin, Mansell remains optimistic about Hamilton’s future at Ferrari.
“I don’t want to put any pressure on him but I think Lewis is going to have a fantastic year,”
Mansell stated.
“He’s a young 41. He’s strong as an ox and super fit. If Ferrari put the car underneath him that he deserves he can do the business still and get that magical eighth world title. I don’t think it’s over yet.”
This endorsement from Mansell highlights the belief that Hamilton still possesses the skill and fitness to compete at the highest level, provided his team delivers a competitive car.
Significance of the Auction and Future Prospects
The auction signifies a major turning point for Mansell, marking the end of holding physical mementos from his racing days while continuing his commitment to philanthropy. By selling his collection to benefit Youth UK, Mansell combines his legacy as a racing champion with support for youth development.
Additionally, Mansell’s public commentary on Hamilton’s performance and future suggests ongoing interest and optimism within the F1 community about the veteran driver’s potential achievements. As Hamilton embarks on his second season at Ferrari, fans and experts alike will watch whether Mansell’s hopes for an eighth world title will materialize.
