Oscar Piastri has expressed confidence that he and McLaren teammate Lando Norris have the freedom to shape their own destiny in the ongoing Formula 1 drivers’ championship. The championship leader commented ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the recent team orders at the Italian Grand Prix, which saw Norris pass Piastri near the end of the race as they finished second and third respectively.
The Italian Grand Prix result narrowed the points gap between Piastri and Norris to 31, leaving Norris with a challenging task in catching up during the upcoming rounds.
Insights from the Italian Grand Prix Pit Stop Strategy
Throughout the Monza race, Piastri remained behind Norris before his late pit stop. Despite Piastri’s stop lasting 1.9 seconds, Norris’s pit time was significantly longer by four seconds, causing him to drop behind once the pit cycle ended. To ensure Piastri kept ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, McLaren instructed a position swap between their drivers, a decision that sparked debate among fans and commentators.
At the FIA pre-race press conference, Piastri reflected on the situation, stating:
“Yes, I do. I think my biggest takeaway from Monza was that on pace and my own performance that weekend, I didn’t deserve to finish higher than third, regardless of what else happened in the race.”
Regarding the team’s choice to swap the drivers, he added:
“The decision that we made as a team… there’s no right answer to that decision.”
Piastri further addressed public reaction to the incident by noting:
“If we had done the opposite, then you’d have the opposite half of the fans saying that was wrong, and vice versa. So ultimately, there’s no correct decision in that. Not really. Obviously, it was a big moment from the race, and I feel like a lot of fans are quite quick to jump on things that are deemed controversial, so, I’m not that surprised.

But I do think we have enough freedom to control our own destiny in the championship.
McLaren Eyes Another Constructors’ Title in Azerbaijan
This weekend at the Baku City Circuit, McLaren is poised to secure the constructors’ championship, aiming to build on last season’s success. Piastri emphasized the difference between this year’s strong form and the previous title battle, reflecting on the progress of the team and car performance.
“Last season went down to the final race, and a pretty eventful final race as well. So I think this year, clearly the car has been a step better, the team has been performing very well. So there’s much more of a sense of inevitability about this year, which is an amazing position to be in,”
Piastri said. He also paid tribute to the team’s work:
“It’s a testament to all the hard work from everyone at the team. I’m the lucky guy that gets to drive the car at the end of the day.”
Upcoming Challenges at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
The race in Baku will test both drivers as McLaren attempts to wrap up the constructors’ crown and Piastri seeks to widen his lead over Norris. This event brings a quick turnaround from Monza and demands sharp focus to capitalize on their current advantage amidst fierce competition from rivals such as Ferrari and Red Bull.
Piastri’s resolve and the team’s cohesion will be crucial in navigating the high-speed, challenging street circuit and maintaining their momentum in both championships.
