Before the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, Piastri held a narrow nine-point advantage over Norris in the drivers’ championship. However, Norris’s mechanical failure late in the race caused a dramatic shift, extending Piastri’s lead to 34 points — the largest margin seen this season between first and second place. Piastri initially took the championship lead in the fifth race of the season, while Norris had started strongly with his victory at the Australian Grand Prix.
Throughout the early months, Norris battled hard to regain momentum and appeared to hold the upper hand, especially after claiming three wins in the four races leading up to the summer shutdown. During practice sessions at the Dutch GP, Norris demonstrated superior pace, outpacing Piastri in every run. However, his retirement without points in the race altered the championship landscape dramatically.

Villeneuve said.
“It’s his championship to lose. That’s very different.”
Villeneuve described how drivers in Piastri’s position often wrestle with defensive driving that can cause mistakes or slip into complacency, risking valuable points. He added,
“You second guess yourself. You drive a little bit more on the defensive, which pushes you into making a you into making a mistake — or do you become a little bit lazy? We’ve seen drivers in that position, [who] lose so many points because they change their way of driving, because they have that little cushion, and that creates extra stress.”
“So we just don’t know how he’s made yet, you know? And that will be interesting to see how he evolves.”
This uncertainty reflects that Piastri has never previously held such a commanding lead in a championship battle, making this phase a true test of his mental resilience and consistency.
Comparing Piastri’s Composure with His Teammate’s Performance
So far, Piastri’s championship defense remains steady. Veteran analyst Martin Brundle, also speaking on Sky Sports, highlighted Piastri’s dependable performance under pressure, in contrast to Norris’s recent setbacks. Brundle described Piastri as “rock solid in his delivery,” capable of maintaining
“a calm head when the pressure is really on.”
