Oscar Piastri has taken a commanding lead in the 2025 Formula 1 championship following a strong start to the season, fueled by his bold departure from Alpine. The 24-year-old Australian driver secured his fourth victory in six races at the Miami Grand Prix, marking his third consecutive win and extending his championship lead to 16 points over his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. This impressive performance has positioned Piastri as the favourite for the 2025 title, showcasing a rapid ascent beyond initial expectations.
Having claimed six career wins so far with McLaren, Piastri benefits from a team that has emerged in dominant form after winning their first constructors’ championship since 1998 last year. Yet, his journey to the top of the F1 world could have followed a very different path, as events surrounding his entry into the sport created significant uncertainty.
In the summer of 2022, Piastri, then Alpine’s reserve driver after back-to-back titles in Formula 3 and Formula 2, was widely expected to replace Fernando Alonso, who suddenly announced his exit to join Aston Martin. Alpine officially named Piastri as Alonso’s successor, but the Australian swiftly clarified his position, denying any contract agreement with the team for the 2023 season.
In a remarkable social media statement, Piastri declared,
“I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.”
This unprecedented move sparked a complex dispute over his services between Alpine and McLaren, escalating to F1’s Contract Recognition Board for resolution.
The legal battle was costly for Alpine, reportedly amassing over £500,000 in legal fees, but ultimately, they lost their claim as Piastri chose to reject the team that had cultivated his career since joining their driver academy in 2020. Before Alonso’s unexpected departure, Alpine had intended to loan Piastri to Williams for up to two seasons, with plans for a firm contract starting in 2025. However, Piastri and his manager, former Red Bull driver Mark Webber, sought alternative opportunities, leading to negotiations with McLaren.
McLaren quickly secured Piastri’s signature to replace the underperforming Daniel Ricciardo and pair him alongside Lando Norris for the 2023 season. Since then, Piastri has demonstrated remarkable growth and skill, swiftly establishing himself as one of the most promising young talents in Formula 1. His performances this season mark his debut title challenge, an achievement unlikely without the decisive choice to join McLaren.
As Alpine continues to face instability, including recent high-profile resignations and ongoing team challenges, Piastri’s escape from the team appears to have been a crucial career move. His decision not only preserved his potential but also accelerated his rise to becoming a leading contender in the sport’s most prestigious competition. With momentum firmly on his side, the coming races will be critical in determining whether Oscar Piastri can convert his early-season dominance into a maiden Formula 1 World Championship.
