Oscar Piastri has expressed increased optimism about McLaren’s potential pace after the recent pre-season testing sessions held at the Bahrain International Circuit. Despite this optimism, the team does not believe it will be the fastest contender when the 2026 Formula 1 season kicks off in Australia.
McLaren set a high benchmark during testing by completing a total of 817 laps with their new MCL40 car, gathering crucial data and experimenting with various setups. The team’s thorough preparation has elevated hopes as they approach the opening race at Albert Park, which is also Piastri’s home Grand Prix scheduled from March 6-8.
Reigning Constructors’ Champions Prepare for Another Competitive Season
As the reigning Constructors’ champions for the second consecutive year and having secured their first Drivers’ title since 2008 through Lando Norris, McLaren enters the 2026 campaign with high expectations. The previous model, the MCL39, showed strong pace throughout much of 2025, keeping McLaren firmly in the top ranks.
However, key leaders within the team, including CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella, anticipate that Mercedes and Ferrari will likely be the teams to beat at the start of the year. They expect the competition to remain fluid, with performance gaps evolving rapidly across the season due to the considerable development opportunities under the new regulations.

Piastri’s Insights on McLaren’s Current Position and Future Prospects
Having extensively tested the MCL40, Oscar Piastri has been able to assess both the strengths and weaknesses of the car, which has helped him and the team identify promising directions for improvement. He conveyed a cautiously hopeful message about McLaren’s chances to challenge near the front but was careful to manage expectations regarding outright pace.
Regarding McLaren’s readiness for race day in Australia, Piastri shared,
“I think we’re probably getting a little bit more optimistic. I mean, the testing has gone smoothly for us, at least. Been able to get a lot of laps in, learned a lot of things, both good and bad. I think we’ve got some good ideas and good directions. You’re going to try a lot of bad things alongside the good things, and I think finding out anything you can before round one is always important, so I feel like we’re making good progress.”
He further underscored the competitive challenge by stating,
I wouldn’t say we’re leading the pack by any stretch of the imagination, but feel like we’re not too bad.

Season Outlook: A Close Battle Expected with Shifting Dynamics
While McLaren is not predicting dominance at the first race in Melbourne, the foundation laid during testing suggests the team will remain within striking distance of the leaders. Lando Norris has also acknowledged that McLaren currently trails some rivals in race trim but the team’s capacity to adapt and develop could alter the pecking order over the course of the season.
With Mercedes and Ferrari poised as the early front-runners, McLaren’s ability to innovate and respond throughout the campaign will be critical. As the new regulations provide ample scope for evolution, the 2026 season promises to be highly competitive and unpredictable.
Piastri’s familiarity with the MCL40 and his connection to the Australian Grand Prix add a layer of anticipation for fans hoping to see their hometown driver challenge at the front stage.
