Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s Australian Formula 1 driver, has opened up about his connection with teammate Lando Norris following their intense 2025 championship showdown. That year, Piastri won seven grands prix and led the title race from April through October but ultimately finished 13 points behind Norris, who secured his first world championship.
The championship slip came after Piastri endured a six-race run without a podium from September to November, which allowed Norris—and Max Verstappen—to close the gap and change the championship’s trajectory. Throughout the season, McLaren aimed to provide both drivers with equal chances to compete for the title, although the team faced criticism for sometimes pushing this balance too far. Despite this, the approach appears to have helped maintain a cooperative relationship between Piastri and Norris.
Looking ahead to 2026, as McLaren anticipates another chance at championship contention under new regulations, Piastri shared his thoughts on their evolving dynamic. Asked whether he enjoys competing against Norris, he told Sky Sports F1,
“So yeah, the relationship’s still good. We’re still working together well and we’ve got a lot of things to try and learn and it’s much easier to learn them with two drivers helping each other than trying to do it individually.”
Prospects for McLaren Amidst Shifting F1 Competition in 2026
McLaren faces a challenging landscape for the 2026 season as new regulation changes threaten to reshape the Formula 1 hierarchy. The team, which has won the last two constructors’ championships and secured the 2024 title by October, must now contend with rivals who may capitalize on the fresh rules.
Mercedes is widely viewed as a strong contender to interpret the new regulations successfully, but McLaren, based in Woking, will strive to remain a front-runner. Their use of a Mercedes power unit in the MCL40 chassis could provide a competitive edge, helping them stay close to Mercedes and Ferrari.
Both Piastri and Norris aim to return to their winning form as they navigate the challenges ahead, reinforcing the importance of their partnership as McLaren targets continued success in the constructors’ and drivers’ battles.
