Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s rising star, sees 2026 as a critical year to enhance specific aspects of his performance and finally clinch the Formula 1 drivers’ championship. After emerging as a serious contender throughout 2025, Piastri is determined to build on his progress and address remaining weaknesses to claim the title.
The Australian driver, who led the 2025 F1 drivers’ standings for an impressive 189 days, encountered setbacks late in the season that cost him a substantial lead. Despite his strong showing in key races such as the Dutch Grand Prix, where he took victory, missteps — including a controversial team order at the Italian Grand Prix and errors in Baku qualifying and the race — hindered his championship bid. These experiences have prompted Piastri to refine his approach as he prepares for the new challenges that 2026 will bring.
Balancing Qualifying and Race Pace Remains Crucial for Piastri
Reflecting on the 2025 season, Piastri acknowledged the significant strides he made in marrying strong qualifying performances with consistent race results, something he struggled to achieve in his earlier years. The 24-year-old from Melbourne pointed out that while he excelled in qualifying during his rookie 2023 season and improved race pace in 2024, it was only last year that he began to deliver consistently in both areas.
However, Piastri admits that maintaining that consistency will be even more vital in 2026 as he adapts to major regulation changes affecting car design and performance. He sees understanding these changes quickly as a key to sustaining championship contention.
The leap in quality I made last year was due to putting into practice the lessons learned in my first two years in Formula 1 with greater consistency,
Piastri told AutoMoto.it. “In 2023, when I was a rookie, I did better in qualifying than in the race. In 2024, it was the opposite.
“In 2025, I managed to be strong in both crucial areas of a weekend, in most cases. I will have to try to do the same this year, with very different cars.
I know how to adapt efficiently. Now, I just need to identify the key changes I will have to face in 2026. I already had an idea in Barcelona, and it will become clearer in Bahrain.
The Battle Within McLaren: Piastri vs. Norris Qualifying Record
Within the McLaren team, the ongoing rivalry between Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris adds another layer of competition heading into 2026. While Norris dominated qualifying face-offs in their first two seasons — leading 15-7 in 2023 and 20-4 in 2024 — the 2025 season saw Piastri close the gap significantly, narrowing the qualifying head-to-head to 13-11 in Norris’s favor.
Piastri achieved his first Formula 1 pole position in China during 2025 and ended the season with six pole positions, trailing only Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with eight and Norris with seven. He also recorded seven race wins, matching Norris’s tally and just one behind Verstappen. Despite these milestones, Piastri experienced a pole position drought in the season’s latter stage, during which Norris regained the championship lead.
Looking Ahead: What Winning the 2026 Championship Means for Piastri
Oscar Piastri’s reflections highlight how crucial it is to combine technical skill, adaptability, and mental resilience to claim the F1 title. His acknowledgment of the need to master both qualifying and race day performance indicates a thoughtful and serious approach to the challenges that 2026 presents.
With McLaren continuing to develop their car under the new 2026 regulations and Piastri gaining valuable experience each season, the stage is set for another thrilling year. His battle with teammates and rivals like Lando Norris and Max Verstappen will likely define the championship’s narrative as he strives to convert his promise into a world title.
