Oscar Piastri came very close to winning the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship with McLaren but ultimately fell short. Despite the setback, the Australian remains hopeful about what lies ahead, focusing on his 2026 prospects and maintaining a positive attitude toward his career growth.
During the season, Piastri demonstrated impressive consistency and a calm approach, frequently outperforming his teammate Lando Norris, who eventually claimed the title. After the summer break, Piastri trailed Norris by 34 points and was 104 points behind championship leader Max Verstappen.
Turning Points in a Challenging Season
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort marked a critical moment, as it was the last race Piastri won in 2025. His hopes of becoming the first Australian Formula 1 champion since 1980 began to fade afterward. A retirement in Baku was the first major error of his campaign and signaled difficulties ahead.
Three races later, Norris took over the championship lead in Mexico, holding on to it until the end of the season. By the final round in Abu Dhabi, Piastri had dropped to third place in the standings, finishing 13 points behind Norris and 11 points behind Verstappen.
Learning from Experience and Looking Toward 2026
Despite the disappointments, Piastri views the 2025 season as a valuable period of development in his relatively short F1 career. Speaking with Australian broadcaster 7Sport, he described the year as a “rollercoaster” but expressed pride in his accomplishments and the team’s progress.
“Yeah, it definitely was. You know, looking back on it, on the whole, I’m very proud of what I achieved,”
said Piastri.
“Also, for the team to have a car and a season as strong as we did was a great success.”
He acknowledged the challenges he faced but saw them as lessons to prepare for the future.
“Obviously, [there were] a few bumps along the road and a few hurdles to get over, and plenty of lessons learned for the future,”
he added.
Optimism Amidst Regulatory Changes
Looking ahead to 2026, Piastri welcomes the upcoming regulation changes, which aim to even the competition across teams. This promises an exciting opportunity for both him and McLaren to build on their strong foundation.
He summarized his outlook by saying,
“But to have the year we had, and to feel like there’s still plenty more progress to come, is a nice place to be,”
demonstrating his determination to improve and aim higher next season.
As the Formula 1 landscape evolves, Piastri’s experience and mindset position him well to challenge for the championship once again, while key figures like Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and rising competitors such as Charles Leclerc and George Russell prepare for a thrilling 2026 campaign.
