Oscar Piastri, the McLaren F1 driver, recently experienced his first Supercars drive by testing the Cam Waters Mustang during a promotional event sponsored by Monster Energy. The session was conducted under strict lockdown conditions, and footage of the outing is planned for future release by Monster Energy.
Distinct Differences Between F1 and Supercars Racing
When asked about the experience by Speedcafe, Piastri confirmed the drive had indeed taken place. He described the Supercars race car as
“the first time driving a race car with a roof on it,”
noting the contrasting feel compared to Formula 1. Unlike F1 cars, where kerbs are hazards that could cause serious damage or injury, he found it refreshing to be able to confidently target them.
He further remarked on the technical differences, saying,
“Just a very different experience – much lower grip, less downforce, less power. A bit more going on when you’re in the car.”
The reduced aerodynamic forces and grip levels offered Piastri a markedly different driving challenge compared to his usual F1 machinery.
Focusing on F1 Career Before Considering Supercars
Despite enjoying the drive, Piastri remains firmly dedicated to his Formula 1 career for the time being. On the subject of potentially racing in the Bathurst Supercars event, he stated,
“At the moment I’m very much focussed on F1 and with the calendar that we have, there’s certainly not going to be a Bathurst co-drive any time soon.”
He added cautiously about the future,
“But who knows? When I retire, maybe I’ll think about it.”
This shows his openness to exploring Supercars racing when his F1 commitments come to an end.
What This Means for Piastri’s Racing Career
Oscar Piastri’s first encounter with the Supercars category provides valuable insight into his adaptability and eagerness to explore different motorsport disciplines. While currently committed to his F1 obligations with McLaren, this experience hints at possible future ventures into Australian touring car racing, particularly the iconic Bathurst event. For now, his focus remains clear, but the door to Supercars may open once his Formula 1 tenure concludes.
