Red Bull Sets High Expectations for Isack Hadjar in 2026 F1

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has shared clear expectations for Isack Hadjar, who will join Max Verstappen in the 2026 Formula 1 lineup. The team plans to build on Hadjar’s impressive debut season as he steps into a high-pressure role at Red Bull, replacing Yuki Tsunoda ahead of the new campaign.

Hadjar, a French driver, faces added scrutiny because many past drivers who occupied this seat struggled to deliver consistent results, raising concerns about the so-called “curse” of this Red Bull position. His promotion reflects the team’s confidence following a strong year with their satellite outfit, Racing Bulls.

Laurent Mekies Highlights Hadjar’s Performance and Development

Mekies praised Hadjar’s rookie season as exceptional, noting his rapid adaptation to Formula 1. Speaking at the Abu Dhabi season finale, Mekies described Hadjar’s progression as remarkable, emphasizing how the young driver improved his performance steadily throughout the year.

“Isack has had an unbelievable first season,”

Mekies stated.

“There is no doubt that in terms of starting point – so where he started in January – the starting point was outstanding.”

He further underlined Red Bull’s belief in both Hadjar’s natural ability and his capacity for growth.

“We have seen so many champions developing through the years, doing things that they had not done in the car a few races before,”

Mekies added.

“We’ve seen that with Isack this year too. We’ve seen him making stuff in the car that he was not doing three races before.”

Expectations for Ongoing Growth and Adaptation at Red Bull

The organizational changes within Red Bull ahead of the 2026 season add an additional layer of interest. With long-time advisor Helmut Marko retired and Laurent Mekies now overseeing the team principal duties since replacing Christian Horner last July, there may be a shift in team culture or approach to driver development.

Mekies addressed questions about the team’s expectations for Hadjar, suggesting that his tenure will be considered a continuous journey rather than a fixed milestone.

“To answer your question, we expect – we would like him to continue onto that path,”

Mekies said.

“We don’t see it as a landing point.”

He explained that the team anticipates Hadjar will keep evolving and delivering stronger performances over multiple seasons.

“We see it as another start for him to continue to develop, to continue to impress us, to continue to surprise us.”

“And you will expect that in the second year. You will expect that in the third year, perhaps in the fourth year. So that’s a little bit the journey for us together.”

Hadjar’s Transition Marks a New Chapter for Red Bull F1

Hadjar’s promotion to Red Bull’s main driver lineup signals a significant investment in young talent as the team prepares for future challenges. Taking over from Yuki Tsunoda, Hadjar joins Verstappen amid the evolving dynamics at Milton Keynes, where previous drivers in this role often faced swift and unforgiving judgments.

With Mekies at the helm and a restructured leadership, Red Bull appears focused on fostering long-term driver development rather than immediate results alone. This approach could reshape how the team integrates emerging talent like Hadjar and sustain its competitive edge in Formula 1.
