McLaren experienced a fuel-supply complication with its Mercedes engine during the second-to-last day of private pre-season testing in Barcelona, the team confirmed on Thursday. This disruption impacted their preparations as they work through initial reliability checks ahead of the new Formula 1 season.
Lando Norris Starts Testing; Oscar Piastri Continues On Track
World champion Lando Norris was the first driver to pilot McLaren’s new MCL40 car on Wednesday. His teammate, Australian rookie Oscar Piastri, completed 48 laps during Thursday morning’s session before the fuel system issue emerged. McLaren’s subsequent testing was suspended as the team undertook a thorough assessment.
“During the lunch break, the team identified an issue on the fuel system that required extensive investigation,”
McLaren noted in an official statement.
“There’s a lot of challenges this year up and down the grid, so it was good to get stuck in,”
Piastri commented.
“These cars are completely different to what we’ve had the last few years. That’s part of what this test is about.”
Aston Martin Debuts New Car; Drivers Prepare for Testing
On Thursday, Aston Martin introduced their latest Formula 1 car, engineered by British designer Adrian Newey. Lance Stroll was the first to take the vehicle onto the Barcelona circuit, with teammate Fernando Alonso scheduled to drive on Friday. The regulatory changes this season have encouraged teams to prioritize reliability during these early testing phases.
Looking Ahead to Official Testing and Season Start
With significant changes in F1 technical regulations this year, teams are using these private tests primarily to ensure their cars’ dependability. A clearer indication of competitiveness among teams is expected to emerge during the official test sessions in Bahrain this February. The new season will commence with the opening Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 8, where performance and race readiness will become fully apparent.
