Ricard Jove: Ducati Would Struggle Without Marc Marquez

Marc Marquez, Ducati’s leading rider, was forced to retire during the Thailand Grand Prix, marking a significant moment in the 2026 MotoGP season. Former MotoGP team manager Ricard Jove expressed that without Marquez, Ducati would face serious difficulties this year, emphasizing the Spanish rider’s vital role for the Italian manufacturer.

The 2026 season opened with a familiar scene as Marco Bezzecchi dominated the Thailand Grand Prix after a clean performance, continuing the momentum from last year. Bezzecchi took the lead immediately and maintained it throughout the race, showcasing his exceptional pace and control.

However, Ducati’s dominance was called into question when, for the first time in 88 race weekends and 1,648 days, no Ducati-backed rider stood on the podium. This unprecedented outcome was surprising, especially for Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, who had a strong pre-season and expected consistent success with the Bologna team.

Ricard Jove Sees Brazil as Key Test for MotoGP Rankings and Ducati’s Stability

During the DURALAVITA podcast, Ricard Jove highlighted the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix as a crucial venue to truly evaluate the hierarchy within MotoGP. He pointed out the unknown factors surrounding the circuit, including track grip and conditions, which make it a tougher challenge for all teams.

Jove stressed that riders often depend on a strong bike foundation to adapt quickly to new circuits, saying this weekend would reveal who can set competitive times early on. He stressed the importance of assessing Ducati’s performance beyond just Marquez’s efforts.

“Let’s go to Brazil, a circuit that is unknown to everyone, We don’t know what level of grip there will be; we don’t know anything. Normally, when you have a good base, you arrive at a circuit and apart from adapting the gearbox a little and adapting the tyres and so on, if the bike is good, you go. If the bike doesn’t have a good base, it’s difficult to get it right in three practice sessions, and we’ll see who gets to Brazil and sets a fast time. Marquez is a guy who has always shown an ability to get up to speed, but we know that we can’t analyse Ducati based on Marc Marquez alone. We have to analyse it by comparing it to the rest of the Ducatis to really know what its value is, and right now, looking at this race, if it weren’t for Marc, even with his tyre problem, Ducati would be in a very bad way, because Aprilia has continued as it did last year, and so has Pecco.”

Marquez Faces Challenges Staying Competitive in Early 2026 Season

Marc Marquez’s struggles became evident before his retirement in the Thailand Grand Prix. Despite making a strong effort in the Sprint race, nearly overtaking Pedro Acosta for victory on Saturday, he showed signs of discomfort riding at the limit with his Ducati prototype over a full Grand Prix distance.

Observers at Buriram noted Marquez appeared exhausted after the weekend’s events, raising concerns given the long 22-race season ahead. This level of fatigue may impact his ability to defend his title effectively in the coming months.

Although the season is still in its infancy, Marquez’s current form has introduced a degree of uncertainty around Ducati’s prospects and the overall championship battle.

Implications for Ducati and the 2026 MotoGP Championship

The absence of Ducati on the podium at Thailand, combined with Marquez’s injury setbacks, signals a possible shift in the MotoGP competitive landscape. Ducati’s dependence on Marquez to maintain their edge is becoming more apparent, and with Aprilia and riders like Bezzecchi demonstrating strong consistency, the Italian factory faces greater pressure.

The upcoming races, particularly in Brazil, will be pivotal in determining whether Ducati can sustain their previous dominance or if new challengers will seize the moment. Ricard Jove’s comment about Ducati being “in a very bad way” without Marquez underlines the urgency for Ducati to find additional reliability and speed from their rider lineup to stay competitive this season.
