Ryan Blaney claimed victory at the Straight Talk Wireless 500 held at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, marking his first win of the 2026 NASCAR season and the 18th Cup Series triumph in his career. This significant achievement also contributes to Team Penske’s total of 108 series wins with Ford, while celebrating Doug Yates’ milestone of 450 NASCAR career wins since his start in 1990.
Key Contributions Behind the Win
Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines, highlighted the teamwork that led to this success.
“Congratulations to Roger, Jonathan, Ryan, and everyone at Team Penske on the win at Phoenix,”
he said. Yates further praised the strategic decisions and the enduring partnership with Ford Racing, remarking,
“Ryan was able to drive to the front of the field throughout the race and Jonathan made a great call on that final pit stop. This win marks the 450th NASCAR win of my career across the Cup Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, and Craftsman Truck Series since I started with Robert Yates Racing in 1990. Every single one of those wins has come with Ford Racing. I am thankful for the Ford family, all the employees at Ford Motor Company, and our employees who contributed to those wins.”
Blaney Reflects on Overcoming Challenges
Despite encountering difficulties during the race, Blaney remained focused and resilient.
“Perseverance. That’s a great word to kind of describe our day. I had a couple mistakes on pit road and learned from them and moved forward, and I didn’t have a mistake the rest of the day. It was unfortunate that they happened back-to-back, but these guys learned from it and rectified it and we were able to stay in the game. Our car was fast enough to be in the game. I thought the 20 was the best car on the day for sure, but we stayed in the game enough and Jonathan made a great call for two on the last caution and we were able to get the lead there and then hold the 20 off. I don’t know how many more laps I could have held him off, but it was enough laps to do it. I’m proud of the whole group for sticking with it all day and cool to win here again, just a handful of months later,”
Blaney said.
Race Dynamics and Team Performance
Joey Logano, Blaney’s teammate at Team Penske, began the race in pole position and dominated for the first 45 laps while Blaney maintained a steady position within the top five. Blaney earned his sixth career stage win at Phoenix Raceway, the highest number he has secured on any track, with Logano finishing third in the initial stage. The second stage was marked by several cautions, including a major crash on lap 104 that involved two drivers among the top 15 contenders, as well as multiple tire-related cautions. Despite two setbacks on pit road that forced Blaney to restart from the back twice, the No. 12 team persevered and steadily moved back toward the front of the field.

Decisive Final Stage and Strategy
The final stage was intensely competitive, featuring numerous strategic moves as teams adjusted to a race that tied the series record with 12 cautions. On a late restart, Ty Gibbs began on the front row with Blaney positioned inside the top five. Displaying speed and skill, Blaney quickly overtook Gibbs within two laps and assumed control of the race. After a two-tire pit stop call from crew chief Jonathan Hassler on the last stop, Blaney managed to hold the lead and fend off Christopher Bell by a margin of just 0.400 seconds to secure the win.
Additional Race Results and Upcoming Events
Other notable finishes included Todd Gilliland of Front Row Motorsports claiming 12th place, while Ryan Preece, Chris Buescher, and Brad Keselowski from RFK Racing finished 13th, 14th, and 15th, respectively. In the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Daniel Dye from AM Racing and Chandler Smith representing Hettinger Racing were the top Ford drivers, finishing first and second in the GovX 200 event.
Looking ahead, both the NASCAR Cup and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series will compete next weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada, continuing the momentum gained at Phoenix.
