Over the course of a year, Shane Van Gisbergen has transformed from a newcomer to oval racing into a competitor beginning to understand the nuances of this specialized form of motorsport. When he first entered NASCAR, expectations centered on his performance on road courses and making significant strides in the playoffs. However, recent changes to the championship format emphasize consistent point accumulation and error-free driving across all track types, including ovals, increasing the challenge for Van Gisbergen.
Progress Evident in NASCAR Seasons on Ovals
During two NASCAR seasons—one in the Xfinity Series and another in the Cup Series—Van Gisbergen has steadily logged valuable experience on oval circuits. His efforts have yielded promising results: a tenth-place qualifying spot at New Hampshire, maintaining a top-10 position through the opening race stage, and a top-10 finish the following week at Kansas. Throughout the later part of last season, he frequently ran within the top five and top ten at various events, demonstrating his growing competitiveness despite race finishes sometimes being compromised by external incidents or vehicle handling issues.
Statistical Improvement Highlights Development
The measurable progress Van Gisbergen has made is reflected in his season statistics. His average finishing position on oval tracks improved from 26.6 during the first half of a season to 22.73 in the latter half. These gains underline his increasing familiarity and adaptability with oval racing, though he remains cautious about his overall readiness to contend for wins.
Van Gisbergen’s Cautious Optimism on Oval Victories
Despite his forward momentum, Van Gisbergen does not yet consider himself a frontrunner capable of outright oval track victories. He acknowledged,
“I think genuinely to win one outright on speed. We’re not there yet, but I can still, I still feel things every week. I have light bulb moments or I feel big progression every week, still, so if that stops happening, I’ll start getting worried.”
Expressing both humility and hope, the Trackhouse Racing driver added,
“But I still know that I have so much to learn and get better at. So yeah, there’s still progress to come. I’d love to win a race on an oval, but I want to genuinely deserve it too.”
Outlook for the Upcoming NASCAR Season
Van Gisbergen and his team recognize that additional speed gains are necessary before they can mount a credible challenge for oval race victories this year. As noted by SiriusXM NASCAR Radio,
“I think genuinely to win one outright on speed, we’re not there yet […] I feel big progression every week, still.”
While he continues to build experience and refine his oval racing skills, the prospect of an oval win remains a goal on the horizon rather than an immediate expectation. His cautious yet determined approach suggests that consistent development and learning will guide his pursuit of success on these demanding tracks.
