Somkiat Chantra is nearing a return to the World Superbike (SBK) scene as the Honda HRC team anticipates his participation in the Portimao round from March 27 to 29. The Thai rider’s recovery from an arm injury is advancing steadily, highlighted by recent training sessions on a Honda CBR600RR, signaling his readiness to compete again.
Injury Details and Impact on Season Start
The 27-year-old Chantra suffered his setback during a private test at Sepang Circuit, where he crashed while riding a Honda CBR1000RR-R. He underwent surgery in Bangkok on January 17, forcing him to miss all 2026 preseason tests as well as the opening round at Phillip Island. This interruption marked a challenging start for both Chantra and the Honda HRC team.
Honda Team’s Early Season Challenges
Honda’s difficulties extended beyond Chantra’s absence, as teammate Jake Dixon also missed his debut weekend due to injuries from a highside crash during testing in Phillip Island, resulting in multiple wrist and hand fractures. In their stead, test rider Tetsuta Nagashima and wild card entrant Ryan Vickers represented the team at the Australian opener.
Outlook for With Dixon’s Recovery and Upcoming Tests
While Chantra is expected to return to racing action soon, possibly starting with tests at Algarve on March 9 and 10, Dixon’s recovery timeline remains uncertain. After surgery at Melbourne Hospital, Dixon will have a follow-up examination in the UK before beginning rehabilitation in Andorra, delaying his SBK debut further.
Significance of Chantra’s Return for Honda HRC
Chantra’s imminent comeback carries weight for Honda HRC as they strive to regain momentum after a difficult start to the season. His presence at Portimao can provide a boost to the team’s performance and morale as they continue to navigate the challenges of the 2026 World SBK season.
