Spire Motorsports Shines with Top Finishes at Atlanta NASCAR

At the Atlanta Motor Speedway on a tense Sunday race filled with weather delays and several cautions, Spire Motorsports demonstrated resilience and skill in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team’s drivers Daniel Suárez and Carson Hocevar delivered standout results, battling through adversity to claim top-five finishes during NASCAR’s overtime, while Michael McDowell endured tough circumstances that limited his track position. These outcomes underscore the competitive drive within the Spire Motorsports NASCAR race effort.

Daniel Suárez Executes a Remarkable Comeback to Secure Fifth Place

Daniel Suárez, piloting the No. 7 Freeway Insurance Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, showed determination and adaptability to move from a 12th-place starting position to finish fifth in the event. Due to qualifying being canceled because of persistent rain, starting grids were based on NASCAR’s rulebook, placing Suárez 12th overall. Early challenges included a tight-handling Chevrolet that improved notably when running in clean air. The team, led by crew chief Ryan Sparks, strategically made multiple pit stops for adjustments, including fresh Goodyear tires and Sunoco fuel. These measures positioned Suárez to advance steadily through the field.

Coming into the final stage from 19th place, Suárez pushed hard. After the seventh caution on Lap 225, he restarted 12th with 36 laps remaining and surged into the top 10 before a multi-car wreck on Lap 258 briefly paused the race. At the restart, Suárez moved from eighth to finish fifth in NASCAR Overtime, marking his 26th top-five and 77th top-10 finish in the Cup Series, a testament to his consistency and growth.

Reflecting on the closing moments, Suárez noted, “Honestly, I thought we were in an amazing spot for that last restart. The No. 77 (Carson Hocevar) was leading the top lane and the No. 1 (Ross Chastain) was in front of me. I thought we were in a beautiful spot to make it work. The No. 97 (Shane van Gisbergen) was on my left side and pushed me wide. I felt like that broke down the top lane a little bit. I’m not sure, but I feel like we could have done a little bit better. I feel like we gave that one away because we were in the perfect spot.

But overall, I’m very, very proud of everyone at Spire Motorsports. I couldn’t be prouder, honestly. This team just continues to fight, continues to show up and continues to get better. They never doubt that we can make the car better. I can’t thank everyone at Chevrolet and the Hendrick Engine Shop enough for the power under the hood. We just need to keep cleaning a few things up to keep getting better, but very excited for the start of the season.” – Daniel Suárez, Driver

Michael McDowell Faces Setbacks but Remains Determined

Michael McDowell, driving the No. 71 B’laster Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, encountered a challenging day that concluded with a 20th-place finish. Starting 20th due to qualifying being scrapped by rain, McDowell began the race moving between positions in the high 20s, eventually improving to 19th during Stage 1 before making adjustments to improve car handling. His team adapted with an air pressure change and strategically timed pit stops, including a two-second fuel stop during a caution at Lap 83, to try to optimize performance.

Despite these efforts, an incident on Lap 223 inflicted damage on McDowell’s car, impacting both the nose and right-rear fender, which severely diminished the machine’s speed. The damage restricted the team’s ability to gain further positions during the final laps, ending the race in 20th place after multiple cautions and overtime attempts.

“It’s unfortunate. We had times we were sitting in a decent spot with our B’laster Chevy, but we were involved in that wreck there and had to manage the damage. It is really cool to see two Spire Motorsports cars get top-five finishes, but disappointed we weren’t up there. Regardless, we got to the end despite a car that had pretty heavy damage. So, we will head back to the shop and get ready for COTA next weekend.” – Michael McDowell, Driver

Carson Hocevar Battles Tire Issues to Claim Fourth Place

Carson Hocevar, behind the wheel of the No. 77 Spectrum Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, overcame early adversity to finish fourth. Hocevar started 15th after qualifying was canceled and moved quickly into the top five by Lap 27. However, a right-front tire issue caused a collision with the outside wall, pushing him two laps behind the leaders. The Spectrum crew worked swiftly to repair damage and swap tires, allowing Hocevar to return to the race despite being a lap down initially.

Capitalizing on NASCAR’s free pass rules during cautions, Hocevar returned to the lead lap twice, and by Lap 93, he restarted in 36th place. Showing impressive tenacity, he climbed back into the top 20 by Lap 116 and was running within the top five by Lap 153, despite further contact with the wall late in the stage. The team chose to pit for repairs and adjust the car’s tight handling before the final green flag run.

A late nine-car accident on Lap 225 gave Hocevar a final pit opportunity and a 21st-place restart on Lap 232. He swiftly made his way into the top 10 and stayed competitive at the front through NASCAR Overtime, finishing fourth after a close battle for the lead at the white flag.

“I was really happy with this No. 77 Spectrum Chevrolet. Our car was really fast to go from two laps down to getting stage points and finishing fourth. Overall, it was a good points day for us. I was taking every run I could. I’m sure I owe people apologies, but I think we’re all battling for spaces and runs. At the end, all four tires were straight. My toe was knocked out, but it was still pretty fast. Pretty excited about a strong start to the season.” – Carson Hocevar, Driver
