Todd Gilliland Struggles Deepen in EchoPark Speedway Race

Todd Gilliland faced significant difficulties during the recent EchoPark Speedway event, finishing 25th after struggling with car handling throughout the race. The challenges came amid a competitive field where fellow racers Zane Smith and Noah Gragson showed mixed results. The ongoing Todd Gilliland race struggles underscored the tough conditions and setbacks experienced by multiple drivers at the Circuit of The Americas track.

Performance Highlights of Zane Smith and Noah Gragson

Zane Smith began the race with a 13th-place finish in Stage One and improved slightly to 12th in Stage Two, ultimately finishing seventh. Smith commented,

“My Aaron’s Rent-to-Own Ford Mustang didn’t start out great. It had speed, but it was a lot to manage, and then as we got through the race we just kept working on it and I felt like we made big gains at one point in time, and then we got to the front row and I had a loose left-rear tire after we took right side tires, so I have no idea how that happened. I’m just glad we didn’t wreck because it was a handful, and then after that I had a little right-front damage but was able to charge back up through the field and have a shot at it somewhat. My gut told me to take the bottom there and it was looking really good for a second, but I just needed a little bit more help. I’m proud of everyone. I wish we scored stage points today because that would have been great, but with that said, we’ve had a couple of great results and a couple great weekends. Hopefully, we can keep going.”

Noah Gragson posted a 12th-place finish in Stage One but fell to 24th in Stage Two, ending the race in 14th. Reflecting on his day, Gragson said,

“We started in a good spot and raced up front for most of the day. The last few restarts just didn’t really pan out for us, and we lost a little track position because of it. Ultimately, I was happy with the handling and the speed of our car and happy to finish these first two crazy races clean with solid results.”

Todd Gilliland’s Difficult Race Experience and Outlook

Todd Gilliland struggled from the outset, finishing 28th in Stage One and dropping to 31st in Stage Two before crossing the finish line in 25th place. Gilliland expressed his frustration, noting,

“This isn’t anywhere near the result we wanted. We struggled all race with the handling and when we seemed to be making progress, we got caught up in that wreck. It’s frustrating, but COTA is a new race with new opportunities, so we’ll come out swinging.”

His comments reveal both the current pain points and a hopeful mindset toward upcoming races at the Formula 1 facility in Austin.

Implications and Next Steps for Drivers at COTA

The race at Circuit of The Americas highlighted the volatility and challenges faced by drivers like Todd Gilliland as they navigate new tracks and tough competition. While some competitors managed to adapt and improve their positions, Gilliland’s ongoing issues with car handling point to the need for strategic adjustments. With the season progressing through diverse racing venues, teams will likely focus on refining their setups to better manage restarts and tire wear, aiming for more consistent finishes in future contests at venues like EchoPark Speedway and beyond.
