On Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, Tyler Reddick secured a remarkable victory in the 68th running of the Daytona 500, holding off a challenging late-race restart with just three laps to go. Driving the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing, Reddick began the race in 26th position and did not lead until crossing the finish line, making his triumph all the more impressive.
The success carried additional significance as 23XI Racing is co-owned by NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, with the win coinciding with Jordan’s birthday.
Following Reddick, former Daytona 500 winners Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Joey Logano finished second and third, respectively. Series champion Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski completed the top five.
Late-Race Contact Between Teammates Triggers Final Restart
In a pivotal moment at lap 192, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin collided in Turns 3 and 4. Bell’s right-front tire was damaged, causing him to hit the outside wall and come to a stop exiting Turn 4. This incident brought out a caution that set up a restart with only three laps remaining.
During the final lap, a multi-car wreck unfolded behind Reddick as he maintained his lead to the checkered flag.
Zane Smith Takes Command in First Stage
The race’s pace was interrupted only once early on for caution, lasting through the entirety of Stage 1’s 65 laps. After a series of green-flag pit stops between laps 56 and 59, Zane Smith in the No. 38 Ford emerged as the Stage 1 winner on lap 65.
He was followed by Austin Cindric, Ryan Blaney, Carson Hocevar, Daniel Suarez, Chris Buescher, Michael McDowell, Ryan Preece, Alex Bowman, and Chase Briscoe, who started just outside the pole position.
Bubba Wallace Captures Stage 2 Victory Amid Caution
Stage 2 concluded under caution due to a two-car incident on lap 123, with Bubba Wallace leading at the end of the 130-lap segment in the No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota. Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, John Hunter Nemechek, and Riley Herbst rounded out the top five finishers for the stage.
