Victoria Rejects MotoGP’s Push to Move Aussie GP to Albert Park

The Victoria State Government has officially refused MotoGP‘s request to transfer the Australian Grand Prix from Phillip Island to Albert Park starting in 2026. This decision comes as the contract between MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (SEG), formerly known as Dorna, and the Victorian Government approaches its expiration at the end of the current season.

Plans to Shift Location Spark Discussions After 2025 Race

Following the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, rumors circulated that Dorna executives were negotiating with local authorities about moving the race to Albert Park, the venue that hosts the Formula 1 event each March. Despite its widespread popularity among riders and fans, Phillip Island’s position on the calendar appeared uncertain amid these discussions.

Government Emphasizes Phillip Island’s Importance to Region and Sport

The Victoria Government firmly highlighted the significance of Phillip Island in maintaining the heritage and economic benefits of the event. In a statement, officials expressed their support:

“The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is synonymous with Phillip Island, and Victoria is proud to support it,”

the Victorian Government said.

They further emphasized the event’s value as one of regional Australia’s major international sporting occasions.

“It’s good for tourism, good for local businesses, and good for jobs.”

Additional Funding Offered to Support Phillip Island Event

To ensure the continuation of MotoGP at Phillip Island, the state government has proposed extra financial backing contingent on the race remaining at the circuit. Proposals include the development of improved facilities such as a new pit complex to enhance the event experience beyond 2026.

Officials emphasized the long-standing history of the venue, noting its role as home to the race on 29 occasions.

“Victoria has agreed to contribute additional funding to help Dorna Sports create a bigger, better event beyond 2026 but only on the condition that the event remains at Phillip Island.”

“Phillip Island is the home of MotoGP. It has held the event 29 times. It is an iconic circuit with a magnificent history.”

The government also expressed eagerness for the upcoming race:

“We are looking forward to another fantastic event in October.”

Continuing Commitment to Preserving a Storied Motorsport Tradition

Victoria’s rejection of the move to Albert Park affirms the state’s commitment to preserving the iconic status of Phillip Island as the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix location. This decision underscores the local government’s focus on sustaining the economic benefits and cultural significance tied to the current venue, reassuring fans, riders, and stakeholders of the event’s future on the island.
