Why Lando Norris Should Fear Oscar Piastri in 2026

Christian Horner has evaluated Oscar Piastri’s chances for a 2026 championship following a disappointing end to the 2025 Formula 1 season. Piastri had led the standings by 34 points after his victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, the 15th race out of 24, making him the favorite before the mid-season break. However, he failed to win any of the remaining eight races and missed the podium in five of those events, allowing his teammate Lando Norris to contest for the title.

Norris took advantage of Piastri’s late-season struggles, performing strongly when it mattered most. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen’s exceptional form pushed Piastri down to third place in the championship by the season’s close.

Christian Horner Highlights Piastri’s Inexperience as a Factor in Last Year’s Performance

Until July, Horner was engaged with Piastri’s McLaren team before stepping down as the Red Bull team principal. In an interview with Australian broadcaster 9 News, Horner spoke about Piastri’s outlook for the upcoming season. He pointed out that missing the 2025 title by just 13 points is likely to fuel Piastri’s determination going forward.

Horner emphasized that, among the top 11 drivers in the championship standings, Piastri had one of the fewest Formula 1 starts, with only Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli having fewer races under his belt. This lack of experience, Horner suggests, held Piastri back, but now in his fourth season, he is expected to improve significantly.

“Oscar will have learned a huge amount from last year,”

said Horner.

“I thought he was odds-on favourite going into the summer break and unfortunately, it sort of fell apart for him at the end of the season there.

“He’ll have learned from that, and that will have hurt him and ultimately motivated him. You forget that the guy has only done a couple of seasons in Formula 1.

“He’s so relatively inexperienced that he’s just going to get better and better, and he’s going to be fully motivated for the season ahead.”

Missed Opportunity: Horner’s Regret over Not Signing Piastri Earlier

Horner has openly admitted that he missed the chance to sign Piastri during his earlier career stages, a decision he now views with regret. This was prior to the high-profile dispute between McLaren and Alpine over Piastri’s future. Horner’s respect for the 24-year-old driver remains clear, as does his belief in Piastri’s potential to challenge Norris fiercely in the coming years.

Commentator Martin Brundle shared similar confidence, predicting that Piastri will return “with a vengeance in 2026. However, Brundle highlighted the need for Piastri to address inconsistencies on low-grip circuits, which contributed to his setbacks last year.

Upcoming Challenges in the Manufacturers’ Battle and Driver Rivalries

McLaren, having secured the last two constructors’ championships, face growing pressure from rivals, particularly due to engine performance improvements from Mercedes. This evolving competitive landscape will require both Norris and Piastri to elevate their performances if McLaren is to maintain its top position.

As the 2026 season approaches, the battle between Norris and Piastri is expected to be intense, with both drivers eager to claim dominance within the team and on the track. Piastri’s growth and resilience after a turbulent 2025 season position him as a serious threat to Norris’s hopes for future titles.
