Zak Brown strongly rejected claims made by an Australian politician suggesting that McLaren favored Lando Norris over Oscar Piastri during the closing stages of the 2025 Formula 1 season. These allegations emerged amid Piastri’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship, which narrowed after controversial moments involving team strategy and race results.
Piastri had maintained a lead of more than 30 points in the final third of the season before several incidents caused his advantage to slip away, bringing Norris closer in contention.
Key Race Incidents Affecting Championship Standings
One notable event was at Monza, where team orders instructed Piastri to allow Norris to pass after Piastri had gained second place due to a faulty pit stop error. Later, during the Qatar Grand Prix, McLaren’s strategic mistakes caused both Piastri, who was leading at the time, and Norris to lose ground to title rival Max Verstappen, who ultimately secured the win.
Political Intervention and Zak Brown’s Rebuttal
Senator Matt Canavan escalated the matter by questioning McLaren’s loyalty to Norris in Australia’s parliament. Brown responded at the time by calling Canavan “uneducated” and reiterated his stance ahead of McLaren’s launch of the new MCL40 car. Addressing media including Motorsport Week, Brown emphasized the unfairness of the accusations and stressed the team’s commitment to fairness.

I think fans – put aside countries – all have various opinions in sport,
Brown explained.
“It can be frustrating when some people – and again, this isn’t country specific – are very uninformed and the statements you see are just ridiculous. But I don’t think that’s territory specific.”
He also noted that Piastri himself has communicated clearly that he is being treated fairly within the team, remarking:
“I think, as Oscar has communicated many times, he knows he’s getting a fair shake at it. You win some you lose some. Things fall your way, things don’t fall your way. We lost Oscar some points, we lost Lando a lot of points in Holland, etc.”
I think we just need to keep our head down, stay focused and the people that matter most to us know that we bring total sporting fairness to our racing team, our papaya fans and our sponsors, family and friends.
Brown Criticizes Political Understanding of Formula 1
Brown expressed disappointment that public figures with little knowledge of Formula 1 have made uninformed comments about McLaren’s team dynamics. He suggested that such remarks are inappropriate given their lack of expertise.
It’s a shame that people in parliament, who I would say are pretty far removed from understanding Formula 1, vocalise things like that,
Brown stated.
He added that he would not comment on politicians’ work since he lacks detailed knowledge of their roles:
I wouldn’t dare, because I’m not knowledgeable, comment on the job they’re doing. But I bet I can make some comments.
Implications for McLaren and the Championship
The controversy highlights the pressures McLaren faces as it tries to balance support between its two drivers during a fiercely competitive season. With Piastri still in strong contention for the title, Brown’s defense aims to reinforce that decisions are made fairly despite external speculation. As the new season approaches, attention will be on how McLaren manages team strategy and driver relations moving forward.
