This weekend in Melbourne, SuperSport begins its coverage of the 2026 Formula 1 season, bringing comprehensive field reporting anchored by Nqobile Kwezi. As Formula 1 enters a groundbreaking era featuring active aerodynamics and hybrid power units, African motorsport fans can count on SuperSport to deliver in-depth action, with reigning champion Lando Norris defending his title against a fiercely competitive lineup.

The Rising Momentum for Formula 1’s Return to Africa

Interest in hosting a Formula 1 race in Africa is intensifying, with Haas driver Esteban Ocon expressing eagerness to compete on the continent. Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park this Sunday, Ocon shared his enthusiasm with SuperSport, highlighting his desire to experience the continent’s landscapes and culture firsthand.

“I would absolutely love to race in Africa; that would be awesome,”

Ocon told SuperSport.

“To be honest, I haven’t thought about it that much because nobody has really spoken to me about it before, but it would be an amazing experience.”

“I’d also love the opportunity to explore more of Africa, see the nature, and experience the continent. I’ve actually never been to Africa before—I’ve never even been to South Africa.”

Ocon pointed out that while Formula 1 has expanded into new regions like the Middle East, Africa remains absent from the calendar, and he expressed admiration for the historic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg.

“I’ve watched some footage of the Grand Prix that was held there back in the day. It looked like an awesome circuit. Hopefully, one day we can race there again.”

High Expectations as the Australian Grand Prix Signals Season Start

The sport’s global spotlight shifts to Melbourne this Sunday, 8 March, at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit for a highly anticipated season opener. SuperSport is delivering its most comprehensive broadcast effort so far, ensuring African racing enthusiasts have a front-row view of what is shaping up to be the sport’s most technologically transformative and unpredictable year.

Recapping the Thrilling 2025 Season and What’s Ahead

The 2026 season follows a dramatic 2025 campaign where Lando Norris, racing for McLaren-Mercedes, clinched his first Drivers’ Championship in the closing laps under desert lights. Norris secured the title by a mere two points, edged out by Max Verstappen’s final-race victory but shielded by his crucial third-place finish.

The previous year was historic not only for Norris but also for McLaren, who defended their Constructors’ Championship for the second consecutive time with impressive contributions from Oscar Piastri, who finished third overall after leading much of the season.

Technical Innovations Redefining the Sport for 2026

This year marks the most substantial technical overhaul in over a decade. The new hybrid power units now sport a 50/50 split between hybrid and combustion energy, and the long-standing MGU-H has been removed. Cars have been redesigned to be smaller and lighter by 30 kilograms, featuring innovative movable front and rear wings that replace the traditional DRS system.

The introduction of the Manual Override or Overtake Mode grants drivers a tactical boost of power, profoundly altering race strategies and pre-season dynamics—highlighted during testing sessions in Sakhir.

Competitive Landscape: Favorites, New Entrants, and Uncertainties

Testing sessions have positioned George Russell and Mercedes as early favourites, with their new chassis demonstrating notable stability. However, the field remains open, with Red Bull entering as a wildcard powered by their inaugural in-house Red Bull-Ford power unit. Defending champion Lando Norris acknowledges that while McLaren’s MCL41 shows promising development, some performance gaps to rivals may persist early in the season.

The paddock also welcomes fresh competitors this year. Audi is officially on the grid following its takeover of Sauber, and Cadillac debuts as the eleventh team, entering with Ferrari engines and experienced drivers Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, amplifying the season’s competitive intrigue.

Veteran contender Charles Leclerc stands as Ferrari’s leading hope, while rookies such as Arvid Lindblad seek to establish themselves within Racing Bulls.

Melbourne’s Albert Park: A Challenging Venue to Launch the New Era

The 5.278-kilometre street circuit combines long straights with technical corners, poised to test the new 18-inch Pirelli tires, which now have a smaller contact patch. Variable weather conditions and fluctuating track temperatures will demand sharp strategic calls from teams, setting the competitive tone for the season ahead.

Anticipating the Impact and Future of the 2026 Season

The 2026 Formula 1 season represents a pivotal chapter in the sport’s evolution, with revolutionary technical changes and fresh team dynamics fueling excitement and uncertainty. SuperSport’s unmatched coverage ensures African fans are fully engaged, witnessing every moment from practice sessions through to the championship decider in Abu Dhabi.
