Martin Brundle has stated that all drivers on the 2026 Formula 1 grid recognize Max Verstappen as the most talented among them. However, Brundle notes that while Verstappen’s skill is unquestionable, his presence also brings certain difficulties that distinguish him from others, including the notably more marketable Lando Norris.
Last season, Norris narrowly edged out Verstappen to claim his first F1 drivers’ championship, finishing just two points ahead after a grueling campaign involving 24 Grands Prix and six Sprint events. Notably, Verstappen was trailing Norris by as much as 70 points with nine races remaining, underscoring the competitive tension between the two drivers.
Drivers Understand the Level Needed to Compete with Verstappen
Verstappen begins the new season in a challenger role rather than as the reigning champion for the first time since 2021, when he secured his initial title. Brundle asserts that Verstappen’s rivals, including Norris, are well aware of the performance standard required to challenge him.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Brundle explained,
“We all agree that Max has got the greatest talent on the grid, and so would Lando, and Oscar [Piastri] and George [Russell]. They know what they’ve got to raise the game to to beat, and they can do that. But Max comes with some other challenges, let’s say. Lando, incredibly marketable.”
Brundle emphasized Norris’s appeal within the sport’s commercial sphere:
“Any door he knocks on or his management knocks on will be already ajar, and then somebody with the other side of it going, ‘What can we do together?’”

Uncertainty Surrounds Verstappen’s Long-Term Future in Formula 1
Despite Max Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull running through 2028, Brundle suggests that the Dutch driver’s position may be uncertain by 2026. Verstappen has a clause allowing him to leave the team at the end of this year if he is outside the top two in the standings at the summer break, although last year’s clause required him to rank below third, a threshold he narrowly avoided.

Verstappen’s strong standing last season prevented a potential move, even though Mercedes’ Toto Wolff admitted talks took place between the team and Verstappen’s management. Should Verstappen become available, widespread interest in securing his services is expected due to his outstanding track record.
Verstappen Shows No Interest in Joining Aston Martin After Pre-Season Struggles
Reports indicate that Verstappen is not considering a switch to Aston Martin in 2027, partly due to the team’s disappointing performance during pre-season testing. Aston Martin’s new car under the 2026 regulations ranked as the slowest in testing, diminishing Verstappen’s enthusiasm for a potential transfer.
The British team has been linked with Verstappen for some time, driven by owner Lawrence Stroll’s ambition to add the multi-time world champion to his roster. However, Aston Martin’s difficulties so far this year seem to have dimmed that prospect.
The Impact of Verstappen’s Presence on the F1 Landscape
Max Verstappen’s exceptional talent continues to raise the level of competition across the Formula 1 grid, compelling drivers like Lando Norris to elevate their performance. At the same time, Verstappen’s demanding nature and the challenges surrounding him create complex dynamics within teams and the sport at large.
As 2026 approaches, Verstappen’s career trajectory remains a focal point for fans and teams alike, with his contract flexibility and Aston Martin’s testing results drawing attention to potential shifts in the F1 driver market. Meanwhile, Norris’s growing marketability adds another dimension to the evolving rivalry and business of Formula 1.
