During the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, Connor Zilisch faced a significant setback after contact with rookie Corey Day from Hendrick Motorsports. The collision occurred in the esses, forcing the JR Motorsports driver to spin and sustain nose damage late in the race, ultimately finishing 21st despite starting from pole position. The incident prompted frustration from Zilisch, who sought an apology following the costly spin.
Seventeen-year-old Brent Crews, who recently made his debut with Joe Gibbs Racing, spoke about the incident on the Door Bumper Clear podcast, expressing empathy for Day while acknowledging the rookie’s mistakes under pressure. Crews highlighted Day’s strong dirt racing background but noted the challenges the young driver faces adapting to asphalt tracks and living up to high expectations at Hendrick Motorsports.
“I grew up racing him in the dirt side of things where he’s really comfortable in. Corey was like the cleanest guy in dirt because he was comfortable. Like he didn’t tear stuff up, like he didn’t do any of that. It is his rookie year. He’s racing for Hendrick. He’s their prodigy that they haven’t had in a long time.
“He has very limited asphalt starts and he’s got a lot of pressure to be the next Hendrick guy. As a driver racing against him, it is very frustrating, but also as a rookie, like I understand how it’s happening, right? It’s tough. So like a part of me has a lot of sympathy, but also a part of it is like he just has to calm down a little bit,” Brent Crews said.
Crews, driving the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing this season, finished sixth at COTA, demonstrating strong performance amidst the rookie challenges seen throughout the field.
Double Spin in NASCAR Cup Series Adds to Zilisch’s Difficult Weekend
Connor Zilisch’s struggles were not limited to the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, as his NASCAR Cup Series race at the DuraMAX Texas Grand Prix the previous Sunday also proved demanding. Starting 25th on the grid, the 19-year-old driver skillfully advanced into the top five. However, on a Stage 2 restart, former Trackhouse Racing driver Daniel Suarez made contact, spinning Zilisch at Turn 1.

Despite recovering from the first incident, Zilisch was spun again at the same corner during a subsequent restart, causing further position losses. These setbacks pushed him far down the order, and he eventually crossed the finish line 14th. The back-to-back spins significantly impacted his points standing, leaving him 36th overall heading into the upcoming race at Phoenix Raceway.
“Such a bummer man. What a fast race car. It’ll turn around soon👊🏼,” Connor Zilisch reacted after the race on X.
Rookie Pressures and Consequences Reverberate Through the Season
The series of incidents involving Connor Zilisch highlight the intense pressure placed on NASCAR rookies competing at the highest levels. With limited experience on asphalt and the fierce competitiveness of road-course racing, new drivers like Zilisch and Day find themselves navigating steep learning curves that can alter race outcomes and team momentum.
As Zilisch continues to gain experience, his performance improvements in finishing positions suggest potential for strong future showings. Meanwhile, rookie confrontations at COTA underscore the need for composure and adjustment during high-stakes events. How these drivers develop in the coming races will play a key role in shaping the competitive landscape of NASCAR’s next generation.
