David Croft Predicts Oscar Piastri Will Win F1 Title Soon

David Croft has expressed confidence that Oscar Piastri will become a Formula 1 world champion by the 2027 season. The McLaren driver came very close to clinching the title in 2025, leading the championship for 15 race weekends before narrowly finishing third, just 13 points behind teammate Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

Now set to compete in his fourth F1 season, the Australian has demonstrated his talent as a formidable driver. Croft believes Piastri has the ability and determination required to capture a world championship in the near future.

Management Changes and Challenges Affecting Piastri’s Progress

Several factors prevented the 24-year-old from winning the title in 2025. Towards the season’s end, Piastri faced difficulties on low-grip tracks, limiting his performance. Additionally, controversial McLaren team strategies during key weekends in Monza and Singapore created further hurdles.

Piastri’s intense focus on becoming champion appeared to disrupt his form in crucial moments, contributing to his shortfall in the standings. His former engineer, Pedro Matos, has since shifted focus to race operations, reflecting an adjustment in the driver’s support framework. Despite these setbacks, Piastri is motivated to overcome last year’s disappointments and improve his consistency moving forward.

Insights from David Croft on Piastri’s 2025 Season and Title Prospects

Speaking with FOX Motorsport, David Croft reviewed Piastri’s struggles last season and expressed optimism about his future. Croft acknowledged the challenges faced on low-grip circuits and characterized Piastri’s 2025 campaign as showing great promise but falling short at critical moments.

“Things didn’t work out. There were those races where he struggled on a low-grip track,”

Croft commented on Piastri’s difficulties during the year.

“Oscar Piastri did what is known in the trade as a freemantle docker last year. He was looking so, so good for much of the season and when it came to crunch time, he just fell a little bit short. This year, let’s hope he goes one better.

When asked about his belief in Piastri’s potential, Croft stated:

“No, I do mean that. I’ve got a lot of time for Oscar. I think he’s a super driver. He’s a wonderful human being. I think Oscar Piastri is a world champion in the making. I think he will win a world title. It might be this year, but there’s six drivers for me that have got a chance of winning this year.

And if he doesn’t do it this year, he’ll do it the year after. It will come. Be patient boys.

Adjusting to 2026 Regulations and Overcoming Psychological Barriers

The 2026 Formula 1 season introduces new car regulations that require drivers to adapt quickly to different vehicle dynamics and management techniques. Former driver and analyst Anthony Davidson has noted these changes may actually benefit Piastri. Since his dominant days in Formula 2, where the cars had similar characteristics to the new F1 vehicles, Piastri’s driving style may be well-suited to the updated machinery.

Despite the technical challenges, the most critical hurdle for the Australian this year is moving past the emotional impact of narrowly missing the championship in 2025. Piastri described the end of last season as “painful,” indicating that the loss took a significant toll on him.

For Piastri to succeed in 2026, he must shake off the disappointment and stay focused on the fresh opportunities the new season presents. As McLaren and the driver aim to capitalize on improved strategies and car performance, the team looks primed to mount a serious title challenge.

The Significance of Piastri’s Future Title Bid

Oscar Piastri’s near-miss in 2025 and his evident talent have drawn considerable attention within the Formula 1 community. With endorsement from influential voices such as David Croft and the potential compatibility of the 2026 cars with Piastri’s skill set, expectations are high for his ascent to the top of the sport.

As the season unfolds, fans and experts alike will watch how he manages the pressures and challenges inherent in Formula 1. Should Piastri harness his potential and overcome past setbacks, he could soon join the elite group of world champions, confirming his status as one of the premier drivers of his generation.
