Esteban Ocon, now entering his ninth full year in Formula 1, shared feelings of sadness about how his career has unfolded as he looks ahead to the 2026 season. The French driver, who began with Manor Racing in 2016 and will be entering his second year with Haas, believes his journey in F1 has yet to reach the level he envisioned due to several missed opportunities and challenges.
Early Career Moves and Team Changes Impacting Ocon’s Progress
Ocon’s progress accelerated when he joined Force India in 2017, regularly scoring points and showing promise. However, the team’s transition to Racing Point in 2018 coincided with turbulence in his career, notably involving a conflict with teammate Sergio Perez. Following this, Lawrence Stroll’s takeover and the rise of his son Lance Stroll led to Ocon’s contract not being renewed, pushing him out of the team despite his efforts.
Hiatus and Return: Milestones with Renault and Alpine
After spending 2019 off the grid with Mercedes, Ocon returned to racing in 2020 with Renault, achieving his first F1 podium at the Sakhir Grand Prix. The team’s rebranding as Alpine the following year saw Ocon claim his sole Formula 1 victory in Hungary. Nonetheless, after this high point, consistent top finishes became elusive, and ongoing friction with teammate Pierre Gasly contributed to Ocon’s departure from Alpine at the end of 2024.
Challenges at Haas: Struggles to Build Momentum
In 2025, Ocon joined Haas but found it difficult to produce stable results, finishing 15th in the championship with 38 points, trailing behind his rookie teammate Oliver Bearman. Speaking with AutoHebdo, Ocon described the disconnect between his achievements and his expectations. He highlighted his pride in past successes but expressed frustration over not being able to fully utilize his potential within the constraints of available machinery.
I won a race, I made it onto a few podiums, I had results that were pretty good, not bad times and podiums in Monaco and so on, it was incredible,
he said.
“And I was talking about it with my dad not long ago. Actually, I don’t understand anything. I mean, I’m not at all where I want to be in terms of results.”
Ocon’s Ambitions Remain Alive Despite Challenges
The Frenchman revealed that his motivation lies in competing for victories and pole positions, goals that have remained just out of reach. He acknowledged that a lack of high-quality equipment has limited his ability to challenge at the front consistently. Still, Ocon maintains a strong belief in his potential and stays committed to relentless effort and risk-taking behind the wheel.
And I still have that dream, I still have it and that’s what drives me every day, working as many hours as I do, getting in the car, giving it my all, taking risks every time, being there, present and 100% committed.
Contract Uncertainty Raises Questions About Ocon’s Future in F1
As the 2026 season unfolds, Ocon faces mounting pressure with his contract due to expire at the end of the year. His performance relative to Oliver Bearman, who edged him slightly in points and showed greater comfort in the car, will likely influence Haas’s decision on a contract renewal. Experts such as Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher have expressed skepticism about Ocon’s ability to secure a seat beyond 2026 if he fails to improve.
Montoya remarked on the possibility of Ocon being replaced should Bearman maintain the upper hand, while Schumacher emphasized the critical nature of the 29-year-old’s performance this year, underscoring the thin margin he has left in Formula 1.
The Impact of Ocon’s Career and What Lies Ahead
Esteban Ocon’s story highlights the fine line between talent and opportunity in Formula 1, where even skilled drivers can struggle without the right equipment and environment. His experience underscores how team dynamics and management decisions can shape a career as much as individual ability. The 2026 season will be pivotal, as it may determine whether Ocon continues as a competitor in the sport or steps away facing unfulfilled ambitions.
