Formula 1 2026 Testing Sparks Two-Horse Race Buzz

The initial group test for Formula 1‘s 2026 regulations commenced on Monday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya amidst strict confidentiality, with teams operating behind closed doors and no official lap times published. Access for journalists was tightly restricted, though unofficial timing figures surfaced online later in the day, fueling speculation about team performances.

Mercedes Emerges as Early Contender Alongside Red Bull

Initial impressions from the paddock indicate Mercedes has shown strong progress, a perspective shared by former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher. He noted, “Mercedes looks very strong,” and added,

“I believe we will see a two-horse race between the factory team and Max Verstappen.”

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli described the new car as “great to drive,” while teammate George Russell remarked that the radically redesigned 2026 vehicles become intuitive once drivers adapt. Russell stated,

“They are quite different for us as drivers but, once you get your head around it, driving them is quite intuitive.”

Russell also expressed satisfaction with their progress, while highlighting the impressive work of other teams.

“We are pleased with our day, but I’ve also been impressed by several other teams too. The Red Bull power unit has completed a lot of laps which, given that it’s their first engine they’ve built, means they’ve clearly done a good job. Haas also managed a similar amount of running to ourselves, so the Ferrari power unit has also put together plenty of mileage. It’s not quite how it was in 2014!”

Red Bull-Ford Power Unit Shows Promise Amidst New Challenges

Attention has focused on Red Bull’s debut Red Bull-Ford power unit, which ran both quickly and reliably despite it being the team’s first in-house engine. Isack Hadjar commented on the cars’ handling, saying,

“I can play with it more easily,”

and added,

“Of course, all the controls are far more complex than before, but I’ve already tried experimenting with all the different settings of the power unit – it’s very interesting.”

Early Issues for Cadillac and Audi Cause Setbacks

Not all teams experienced smooth outings. Newcomer Cadillac faced technical difficulties and slower pace, while Audi also encountered initial problems with its newly developed power unit. Gabriel Bortoleto explained,

“We decided afterwards not to go out again until the problem had been fully investigated. We had almost expected this problem beforehand. Unfortunately, it came about a little sooner than expected. But you always have to remember that we’re a new team building our own power unit for the first time.”

He added reflections on the new cars’ performance:

“The cars are really completely different. My feeling is that it’s a bit slower than the old Formula 1 cars. But it’s cool that we now have 50 percent electric power. You have so much power coming out of the corners.”

Other Teams’ Participation and Testing Delays

Alongside Mercedes, Red Bull, Cadillac, and Audi, teams such as Alpine and Racing Bulls were engaged in testing. Ferrari and McLaren were expected to join from Tuesday, with McLaren set to showcase a black test livery. However, the continued absence of Williams sparked concern. Team principal James Vowles downplayed the delay, but Italian media, including La Repubblica, reported multiple FIA crash-test failures and alleged significant overweight issues with the Williams car, describing the situation as an “embarrassment” that has kept them from Barcelona entirely.

Aston Martin had yet to hit the track as well. Confirmations from sources stated the team passed all FIA crash tests, though an Aston Martin spokesperson said,

“Our intention is to run Thursday and Friday,”

amid rumors of delays related to Honda power units and technical complications.

Unofficial Times Suggest a Close Battle Ahead

Unofficial lap times circulating after the first day indicated Isack Hadjar led the standings, half a second clear of George Russell, spotlighting a potential close duel among top contenders as the season progresses.
