Chase Briscoe recently revisited the difficult phase Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) faced during the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, revealing how a blunt and unexpected speech from Kevin Harvick marked a turning point in the team’s struggling performance. The exchange took place amid mounting frustration over poor results and mechanical failures.
During a team debrief, Harvick used the example of a minor, neglected issue—a broken light bulb in the shop bathroom—to illustrate the broader problems impacting the team. Despite being out for seven months, the bathroom light hadn’t been fixed, symbolizing a lack of attention to the small things that ultimately affected on-track outcomes.

Briscoe said.
At SHR, we had this huge pothole right out front. In the bathroom upstairs in the engineering department, where we did our debriefs, the light in the men’s bathroom was out. It had been out for seven months.
Briscoe described how Harvick’s frustrated rant connected these details to the team’s poor showing on race day. Harvick challenged the group to reflect on why they couldn’t fix minor issues like a light bulb yet expected to perform at a high level on the racetrack.
He goes on this tangent about how we have to be better about doing the little things right because we’d had a couple things fall off cars, mechanical failures,
Briscoe recalled.
He ties it in and says, ‘How can you expect us to even put cars on the racetrack when we can’t even change the effing light bulb in the bathroom?’
That moment clearly struck a chord. According to Briscoe, the team immediately acted—the light bulb was replaced the next day, and the neglected pothole outside was soon repaired. This response embodied the lesson Harvick wanted to convey: success on the track requires discipline and accountability in every part of the organization, no matter how small.
Briscoe emphasized that Harvick’s 10- to 15-minute speech was more than just criticism; it was a call to elevate standards and restore pride within SHR during a tough season. For Harvick, the pathway to improvement wasn’t only through technical adjustments but also a renewed focus on the fundamentals behind the scenes.
This episode underscores how leadership and attention to detail can influence a team’s culture and performance. By addressing even minor issues symbolically, SHR laid the foundation for its subsequent turnaround during the challenging 2023 campaign, with Chase Briscoe and Kevin Harvick at the heart of this shift.
