Jack Doohan Joins Haas as F1 Reserve After Setback

Australian driver Jack Doohan has found a new opportunity in Formula 1 as Haas announced him as their reserve driver, shortly after missing out on a racing seat in Japan. The 23-year-old, who concluded his association with Alpine earlier this year, is now positioned to support Haas alongside their experienced reserve, Ryo Hirakawa.

Doohan’s Racing Background and Alpine Departure

Doohan parted ways with Alpine in January after being sidelined early in the previous season, missing most of the races following just seven appearances. Despite this setback, his experience remains valuable, especially as he steps into Haas’s reserve role. Team principal Ayao Komatsu highlighted Doohan’s time with Alpine as an asset for their squad.

Expectations for Doohan’s Role at Haas

In his reserve capacity, Doohan will be prepared to substitute for regular drivers Ollie Bearman or Esteban Ocon if either is unable to compete due to injury or illness. Komatsu emphasized the commitment needed to stay race-ready and integrate well with the team dynamics, particularly for a driver eager to return to full-time racing.

“The ‌dedication required to remain sharp and prepared to race while getting to know how the team works ‍and so on, it’s challenging for any driver — especially one who’s obviously still very keen to race again at this level,”

Ayao Komatsu, Haas Team Principal

“I’ve enjoyed getting to know Jack and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the team and benefiting from his contributions.”

Future Prospects within Formula 1

While Doohan has yet to complete a full season since 2023, his current position could open doors to a permanent race seat. Ferrari junior Ollie Bearman, who is also a Haas driver, is widely viewed as a potential successor to Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in the future. Esteban Ocon, entering his second year with Haas after transferring from Alpine, retains a strong presence in the lineup that originally facilitated Doohan’s debut.

Lost Opportunity in Japan and Upcoming Season Engagement

Doohan was expected to drive in Japan’s Super Formula championship with a Toyota-powered team, despite earlier setbacks including multiple crashes at Suzuka during testing. Negotiations ultimately stalled, reportedly due to disagreements over engineering rather than budget issues. Nevertheless, Doohan will attend the Australian Grand Prix with Haas when the Formula 1 season begins from March 5 to 8, underscoring his ongoing involvement in the sport.
